Three months later, the international financial crime trial began.
I sat in the gallery.
In the defendant's dock were Rhett and Nina.
This once "perfect couple" had become adversaries pointing fingers at each other, the atmosphere tense and hostile.
"Your Honor, I'm innocent!" Nina's voice carried fake sobs.
"Rhett deceived me! I'm just an innocent mother!"
Rhett trembled with rage.
"Nina, you lying bitch! Those estates, yachts, diamonds—which ones didn't you insist on buying?"
"You even made me forge art transaction records to help you launder money into your secret Swiss accounts!"
"Rhett! You're lying! You wouldn't even spare your wife's father's life-saving money! You're the bastard!"
In court, they exposed each other's darkest secrets.
I watched them insult and curse each other, feeling completely unmoved.
The judge rendered the verdict.
"Defendant Rhett, for crimes of international financial fraud, massive tax evasion, and money laundering, with combined punishment, is sentenced to thirty years imprisonment, confiscation of all personal assets, and lifetime ban from the financial industry."
"Defendant Nina, for money laundering and receiving illegal proceeds, is sentenced to ten years imprisonment. All illegal proceeds under her illegitimate son's name will be recovered."
The gavel fell.
Rhett collapsed in his seat, completely defeated.
Nina screamed in protest but was quickly dragged from the courtroom by bailiffs.
It was all over.
With Preston's team's assistance, I regained control of Ward Group's core assets.
Six months later.
Ward Group's top floor.
I stood before the floor-to-ceiling windows, overlooking New York's nightscape.
This had once been my father's office, later seized by Rhett.
Now it was back in my hands.
Preston walked over with a glass of champagne.
"Congratulations, Lydia."
I took the glass and clinked it with his.
"Thank you, Preston."
"You're stronger than I imagined. I believe your father would be proud of you."
I smiled.
In the past six months, I had transformed from a financial rookie into a leader who could sit across from the sharks of Wall Street and hold my own.
Rhett thought he had destroyed me, but actually, he had forged me into something stronger.
"Preston, I formally invite you to serve as the Ward family's chief legal counsel."
Preston raised an eyebrow.
"My fees are very expensive."
"You're worth it."
We clinked glasses again.
Outside the window, lights sparkled brilliantly.
Past pain had transformed into the hardest armor.
My new life was just beginning.
