"Good luck, my ex-wife."
Rhett hung up.
I collapsed to the floor.
I had lost! Lost everything!
The twenty million emergency fund was frozen, Ward Group's liquid assets cleared out.
Rhett had used one trap to cut off my last escape route.
I had nothing left.
The sole heir to a billion-dollar empire couldn't even survive tomorrow.
I looked at Preston, who had remained silent throughout the video call, my voice trembling as I spoke.
"Mr. Preston. I have no money."
"I know."
Preston lit a cigarette.
"Not just for legal fees—no startup capital either."
I closed my eyes, preparing to wait for him to end the video call.
But Preston blew out a smoke ring.
"Lydia, you seem to have misunderstood something."
"Rhett's little 'financial games' might work on you, but to me they're child's play."
"On Wall Street, destroying enemies is much more interesting than earning a few million in consulting fees."
Preston flicked his ash.
"Contingency fee basis—I'm taking the case."
"Thirty percent of recovered assets."
I nearly cried. "Thank you..."
"Don't thank me yet. Now, let's get to work."
Preston's team began conducting penetrating analysis of that offshore trust.
Over the following days, I immersed myself in documents.
I had to learn Rhett's professional terminology to find his weaknesses.
A week later, Preston called.
"Lydia, good news."
"Found it?"
"Rhett is smart, but has one fatal weakness."
"What?"
"Greed. He's too greedy!!"
Preston displayed the trust structure diagram on screen.
"He designed a 'dual offshore + illegal proxy holding' structure—extremely aggressive, extremely high risk."
"To completely eliminate you, he bypassed the trust protector's oversight mechanisms."
"In trust law, this is a serious violation."
"But that's not enough—there's something more important."
Preston enlarged a section of fund flows.
"He's not just coveting your family's billion-dollar fortune—he wants to pay zero taxes."
"For ultimate tax avoidance, he forged massive trade flows during fund transfers."
"Simply put, he's money laundering."
I gasped.
"Lydia, do you know what this means?"
"Rhett's supposedly perfect trust might be impregnable in the Cayman Islands."
"But he forgot there's something more dangerous than local sharks."
The "more terrifying existence" Preston mentioned was the IRS.
"Rhett's trust contains massive US dollar assets. He must report to the IRS."
"But he didn't."
"Not only didn't he report, he engaged in tax evasion and money laundering through forged flows."
I understood.
"Challenging trust validity in the Cayman Islands might take ten years. But in America, tax evasion is a felony."
"Exactly!" Preston snapped his fingers.
"Financial crime investigation authority supersedes all trust confidentiality."
"We're going to use leverage."
"That leverage is the IRS."
