Nearly all of the top ten trending topics on Twitter were related to him.
Rhett's carefully maintained elite image collapsed overnight.
He became a criminal in everyone's eyes, with all attention focused on him.
Preston called.
"Lydia, well done."
"What about the trust?" I asked.
"It's been frozen by financial regulators from multiple countries. The entire structure is paralyzed. He can't touch a penny now."
"What about Nina?"
"She can't escape either. As a recipient of stolen money and accomplice in money laundering, the IRS is looking for her too."
Three days later.
Through the detention center's glass, I saw Rhett.
He wore a prison uniform, his hair disheveled, unshaven.
He looked at me, confusion flashing in his eyes, but it was quickly replaced by desperate rage.
"Lydia! You bitch! You destroyed me!" He grabbed the phone and screamed at me.
"I destroyed you?" I laughed coldly. "Rhett, you were too stupid, too greedy."
"You forgot—there's no perfect crime."
Rhett's pupils contracted.
"It was... the IRS? You reported my tax evasion?"
"Congratulations, you got it right."
Rhett finally understood.
He hadn't lost because of the trust structure, but because of his bottomless greed.
He thought he could circumvent the law, but instead was crushed by it.
"Lydia, you bitch! I won't let you get away with this!" he screamed hysterically.
"Shut up. You should think about how to spend the rest of your life in prison."
I hung up the phone and walked away.
Meanwhile, Nina wasn't faring well either.
The estate was seized, sports cars towed away.
She was also listed as a criminal suspect.
"Lawyer! Lawyer! What should I do?"
Nina cried in the law office.
"Miss Nina, the situation is very unfavorable for you. You received large amounts of illegal proceeds under your name."
"That was all from Rhett! I knew nothing!"
The lawyer shook his head.
"The only option now is to separate from Rhett and become a cooperating witness."
"Put all the blame on him."
Nina stopped crying. "What about my child? Kimi is a trust beneficiary..."
"The trust has been ruled illegal. Beneficiary rights are invalid. All the money will be confiscated."
"What?!" Nina shrieked. "No! That's my money! My son's money!"
"Nina, right now, your priority is staying out of jail."
Nina fell silent.
A few seconds later, she looked up.
"Fine, I'll be a cooperating witness."
"I know everything Rhett did."
"He forced me into it. I'm also a victim."
Their former "true love" crumbled when faced with self-interest.
