Gerald's voice cracked with desperation. "Miss Barren, you can't do this. Eleanor was my wife. I was the most important person in her life—she would have wanted to rest beside me. Please, don't tear us apart. Give her back to me."
Alma's laugh was sharp, dripping with disdain. "Give her back? For what, Gerald? Now that she's gone, you suddenly care so much?"
She stepped closer, eyes narrowing. "Cut the act. You're only here to make sure Eleanor's really dead, to see if you'll face charges, and to figure out if you and Joanne can keep sneaking around like rats."
The suffocating silence outside pressed in, making my thoughts feel sluggish. It was almost impressive—even after two lifetimes, Gerald's first instinct was still to protect Joanne.
Thankfully, none of it mattered to me anymore.
A violent thud shattered the quiet. Gerald was pounding on the door, his voice frantic. "Miss Barren, you've got it all wrong!"
He gasped out his excuse like a drowning man. "When we were kids, I was in a car accident—Joanne saved me but lost the ability to have children. That's why Eleanor and I agreed never to have kids. Joanne means nothing to me, I swear! She's like a sister!"
His words tumbled out faster. "If you don't believe me, I'll ship her overseas tonight. She'll never contact me again. Just give me Eleanor back. I'll hand over the entire Riverton Family if that's what it takes."
The irony was almost laughable. Gerald, who had once valued the Riverton name above all else, was now offering it up like spare change. Was this his idea of an apology? Pathetic.
Alma scoffed. "You really have no idea, do you? Joanne's been using you to steal classified Riverton documents and sell them overseas. And you're so blind you were about to help her flee the country?"
She smirked. "Too bad, Mr. Riverton. Joanne won't be going anywhere—except prison."
The wail of police sirens cut through the air, growing louder. Gerald stood frozen, uncomprehending. "What documents? What murder? Joanne would never—"
"Mr. Riverton," an officer interrupted, flashing his badge. "You're under investigation for intentional assault. Come with us."
Joanne's shrieks echoed down the hall. "Gerald! They're arresting me for no reason! Tell them it was Eleanor who tried to kill me! Tell them!"
Gerald's face darkened as he turned on the officers. "You can't just arrest someone without evidence. This is clearly the Barren Family pulling strings!"
But the police weren't swayed. They handed him footage from the accident scene.
Gerald's hands shook as he watched. His mouth opened, then closed, like a fish gasping for air. He looked from the screen to Joanne—now deathly pale—then back at the officers.
Before he could speak, they played another video. "Joanne Clooney, three years ago, you were driving a white sports car that struck and killed a 28-year-old man on Avenue Street."
The officer's voice was cold. "That man was Eleanor's older brother, Edward White."
