"Miss Barren, I'm begging you—just let me see Eleanor one last time."
Alma's icy laughter cut through the door. "Mr. Riverton, you certainly have time to spare—scaling forty-nine floors overnight after your little proposal. When's the wedding? Should I reserve my congratulations?"
Gerald's jaw tightened, unease twisting in his chest. "Miss Barren, proposing to Joanne was necessary. After the incident... she was in bad shape. I had to grant her wish."
"Bullshit!" The sharpness in Alma's voice startled me—this wasn't the composed woman I knew.
She continued, her words like daggers: "Tell me, Gerald—was this really about her happiness, or just your own cowardice? You know the truth. Since when does a depression diagnosis happen in two days?"
Her voice dropped to something lethal. "Only a fool like you would keep falling for her act. Did you even flinch when you sliced Eleanor open? She knew about her clotting disorder, yet she still carried your child. You don't deserve to breathe the same air as her."
Outside, Gerald went statue-still. His head jerked up, lips trembling. "W-what? Miss Barren... are you saying the baby was mine?" His question pierced me like a shard of glass.
Eight years together. Eight years, and he'd never trusted me—not even as his scalpel cut into me. No wonder he'd been so calm afterward, leaving me to bleed out for three days.
Coming to see me now must feel like charity work.
Alma's mouth curved into a humorless smile. For a second, I thought she might show him the paternity report—then I saw her reconsider. She drew a steadying breath, reining in her fury.
"Listen carefully, Gerald. You'll never lay eyes on Eleanor again. As of today, she's my sister—the second daughter of the Barren family. Her ashes will rest in our family plot."
My throat tightened. "Miss Barren—"
She silenced me with a look, her palm upturned: Let me fight this battle for you.
My brother had been the last person to show me kindness—until Joanne took him from me. And the man I'd loved for nearly a decade? He'd chosen her side without hesitation.
The bitterness rose like bile. I swallowed it down and said nothing.
Outside, the dull thuds continued—Gerald's forehead striking the floor, nurses pleading in vain to treat his self-inflicted wounds.
