Seeing Magnus, Phoebe immediately flew into a rage. "Magnus, she hit my sister!"
However, Magnus stared at his own palm in shock, then looked at me with guilt. "Ophelia, I didn't mean to..."
Clarissa sneered, "Is this how the great Magnus Evermere proves his loyalty to us? Still entangled with his ex-wife after divorce?"
"In that case, my sister and I simply can't be with you."
"We come from a respectable family. We absolutely refuse to be homewreckers."
She gave me a meaningful look. "Unlike some people who can't take a hint and leave. Is this the dignity of your high society?"
Magnus's face grew tense. "Ophelia, apologize to Clarissa and Phoebe."
Snow began to fall from the sky. I held my dog's stiff body tightly against my chest.
I met his gaze defiantly, my eyes flashing with fury. "They killed my dog."
They had killed my companion of fifteen years—the last thing my mother had left me in this world!
A flicker of pity crossed Magnus's eyes, but Phoebe grabbed her sister's arm. "Magnus, that beast attacked my sister first!"
My blood boiled. My dog was gentle—she would never attack anyone without reason.
Magnus immediately went to check Clarissa's hand. "Does it hurt?"
Clarissa turned her head away irritably. "What does it matter if it hurts? The real culprit won't be punished anyway."
Magnus's voice became indulgent. "My little princess, what do you want me to do?"
Clarissa glared at me viciously. "Since your ex-wife has so much sympathy for beasts, why doesn't she spend the night in the doghouse?"
Magnus agreed without thinking. "Fine. As long as Clarissa is happy."
Clarissa finally smiled, her smile so brilliant that Magnus was mesmerized, unable to look away from her face.
Then Magnus looked at me with disgust and ordered his guards: "Do as Clarissa says!"
The guard hesitated, reluctant to continue. "But sir, it's more than ten degrees below zero outside. Mrs. Evermere, she..."
Clarissa's face darkened as she turned to leave. "Even your security listens to your ex-wife more than you do. How can I trust that you'll treat my sister and me well?"
Magnus immediately chased after her, pulling her into his arms. "Alright, alright, Your Highness, we'll definitely do as you say!"
Then he glared at the guard. "What are you waiting for? Act now!"
I struggled violently but was still locked in the doghouse.
Phoebe picked up the dog by its tail, turned to Magnus with a smile, and said: "Magnus, it's freezing today—perfect weather for a hearty stew. How about we roast this mutt to celebrate the move?"
I desperately grabbed the cage bars. "No! Please!"
"I'm begging you! Magnus, don't do this to Autumn!"
I knelt in the cage, hitting my head against the bars repeatedly, but Magnus was entranced by Clarissa's face, putting her hands to his lips and blowing on them repeatedly to keep her warm.
He didn't look at me again, wrapping his arm around Clarissa's waist and taking Phoebe's hand as they walked into the mansion.
I called his name over and over, each cry more desperate than the last, like the wails of a tortured soul in the dead of night.
I don't remember when I passed out from the cold. When I came to, the smell of cooking wafted from the mansion.
In front of me was a bowl of broken bones.
My nails dug deep into my palms. "Magnus Evermere, I will never, ever forgive you."
But when I woke up the next day, he was sitting by my bed with red eyes.
