There was no hiding my battered face from Lilith's sharp eyes.
She was furious for days afterward, lecturing me every time I so much as breathed wrong.
Finally, I couldn't take it anymore. I pulled the blanket over my head and whined, "You're so mean to me! Always picking on the sick person. I bet if you met my mom, she'd out-argue you in two seconds flat."
Lilith went quiet for a long moment. Then her hand found my hair, stroking gently.
"When you get better," she said softly, "I'll take you to see her. I promise."
We both knew she was lying. We both knew I wasn't getting better.
But I couldn't bear to see the pain in her eyes, so I smiled and nodded. "Okay."
After that, I threw myself into recovery with desperate determination. Swallowed handfuls of pills without complaint, let the nurses turn my arms into a patchwork of purple and yellow bruises from all the IVs.
Damien watched it all from his chair by the window, jaw clenched so tight I thought his teeth might crack. Eventually, he stormed out.
That night, I heard them fighting in the hallway.
"Celine wants to see her mother's grave," Damien's voice carried through the thin walls. "Can't you understand that? What's the harm in letting her go once?"
Lilith's response was pure venom. "I think you're hoping she dies faster! You bastard—you want her gone so your little mistress can finally play Luna without competition!"
I wiped away tears in the darkness, hating myself for becoming such a burden. For making Lilith fight battles she shouldn't have to fight.
For still being alive when everyone would be better off if I wasn't.
