Damien dragged Piper away, promising he'd come back to explain everything.
I couldn't care less about his explanations.
Lilith looked down at me with concern. "You okay, honey? Does anything hurt?"
I pressed a hand to my chest, putting on my best pitiful expression. "My heart hurts. I think only some retail therapy could cure it."
She laughed despite herself, and seeing that I'd been stronger lately, agreed to take me out for a few hours.
I bought a french fries from a street vendor and climbed into her pristine little car. Lilith was such a neat freak—normally she'd murder anyone who even thought about eating in her vehicle.
But I played the dying girl card shamelessly, making a complete mess as fries crumbs scattered across her leather seats. She gritted her teeth and pretended not to notice.
I directed her to an upscale bridal boutique. Her wedding was supposed to be this spring, but I wouldn't be there to see it.
I wanted to watch her try on wedding dresses. She didn't ask why I'd brought her here—just followed me inside with tears already gathering in her eyes.
We understood each other perfectly, my best friend and I.
I picked out a gorgeous strapless satin gown and sent her to try it on. While she was changing, I grabbed a bridesmaid dress for myself.
When I'd squeezed into the pale blue silk, I slipped into her dressing room so we could take a selfie together in the mirror.
Like I might actually be there to walk her down the aisle.
My taste was impeccable—Lilith looked absolutely radiant in that dress.
"Should we buy it?" I asked casually.
She rolled her eyes. "Are you insane? Do you see these price tags? Highway robbery."
"Let's just take a few more pictures and get out of here."
I smiled and left her posing in front of the mirror, slipping out to pay for the dress while she wasn't looking.
She was the most incredible person I'd ever known. She deserved the most beautiful wedding dress in the world.
Fighting through the brutal pain in my chest, I left the boutique and caught a cab to the cemetery.
This was it. Time to say goodbye properly.
No jokes this time. And Lilith wasn't allowed to cry.
