Word around the pack is that Damien's absolutely crazy about me.
Piper clearly doesn't buy it—she rolls her eyes and makes this little scoffing sound under her breath.
She sets down a cup of coffee in front of me, her voice dripping with fake sweetness. "Celine, luna, how could alpha Damien just... leave you waiting out here like this?"
"It's so weird," she continues, tilting her head with practiced innocence.
"Every other time I've come by the office, no matter how swamped he was, he'd drop everything to see me first. Said I was his top priority, you know?"
"Guess I thought he treated all his women that well..."
She smiles then—this sickeningly sweet expression that reminds me exactly of myself at that age.
God,how ridiculous!
Thing is, she's not entirely wrong. Damien does treat her differently.
Sure, he had countless mistresses. They're all just props in his little revenge fantasy, tools to get under my skin. He parades them through our house night after night, waiting for me to crack, to finally show some jealousy.
Most of them? He gets bored within days, maybe weeks if they're lucky. Tosses them aside like yesterday's newspaper.
But Piper... she's different. He actually takes care of her.
Sets her up in that fancy downtown apartment, takes her to dinner, shopping, those cute little movie dates.
They look like any other couple in love when they're together.
He gives her money, sure. But he gives her attention too.
I study her face for a moment, then smile gently. "If you're so important to him, sweetie, why do you think he keeps you as his dirty little secret?"
"Maybe you should convince him to break bond with me and make you his new Luna."
Her mask slips instantly. Color drains from her face before flooding back in an angry rush.
"The unloved luna is the real mistress here," she hisses, leaning closer. "You're the one who doesn't belong!"
"Just because you knew him first doesn't mean shit. Look at yourself—you're old, you're pathetic. What could you possibly offer him that I can't?"
Her coworker scrambles over, probably worried I'll cause a scene or report back to Damien.
But honestly? I couldn't care less.
I made peace with this long ago. I won't get angry over Damien anymore. Won't let him break my heart or make me fight other women for scraps of his attention.
He's just not worth it!
