Cassian reached out to every contact I had, but before he could track me down, news broke that major investors were pulling out of pack ventures.
As word of the mass exodus spread, the pack company's stock price nosedived toward complete collapse.
He had to skulk back to the office like a beaten dog.
He spent hours groveling before the council of elders, swearing he’d contain the fallout and somehow reclaim the pack company’s core technology secrets.
After barely surviving that clusterfuck, he dragged himself back to the hospital, only to hear Annabelle's whining the second he walked through the door.
"Cassian, your beloved Luna is tearing everything apart. Have you seen what the pack is whispering about me?"
"She's nothing but a crippled liability now—can't even wipe her own ass without help. Just reject her already and show her who's Alpha."
"I shouldn't have to deal with this harassment. The comments are absolutely savage."
Annabelle's voice quivered with self-pity, completely clueless about how fucked they really were.
Cassian looked like he'd aged a decade, but he still tried to soothe her.
"Evelyn went too far—but we pushed her way past her limit."
"I've been thinking... maybe I went too far with her legs. She used to be so vibrant, always moving. Being paralyzed must be destroying her wolf."
"When she comes back, I'll bring in the best healers in the pack. I'll fix this mess."
That set Annabelle off, but before she could unleash her fury, Cassian's phone exploded with debt collection notices.
He switched tactics desperately: "Annabelle, I need those pack shares back—just temporarily while I sort this out, then I'll—"
Annabelle cut him off with pure venom.
"Hell no! You gave them to me and our son. You don't get to take back gifts when things get tough."
Her reaction blindsided him completely. He stared at her in shock.
He'd always believed they were soul-deep connected, which was why he'd signed over part of his pack holdings after she'd given him an heir.
He'd sacrificed his true mate for her, genuinely believing they were building something together.
That's why he'd been willing to destroy me, but now...
"The pack’s bleeding money right now. I just need those assets back to steady things—then I’ll give everything back to you."
Cassian tried reasoning with her, but Annabelle went full psycho.
"You regret giving it to me, don’t you? You and that useless little cripple are scheming behind my back to take it all! Well, guess what—I’m not giving up shit. It’s mine now. Mine."
"Don't you dare forget—I gave you a heir. How can you treat me like this after everything?"
Since he couldn’t get the shares back from Annabelle, Cassian had no choice but to sell off the Alpha’s estate.
Margaret had to move from the lavish pack house to a shitty apartment. When she discovered Annabelle had refused to return the shares, she stormed to the hospital.
The two women barely got through pleasantries before they were tearing into each other.
Margaret, older and outmatched, grabbed a pot of scalding water in desperation and hurled it at Annabelle's face.
Annabelle suffered third-degree burns over ninety percent of her face.
Margaret was arrested immediately for aggravated assault.
I got word of all this chaos right after finishing my physical therapy session.
I'd flown in the world's best specialists, and thanks to immediate intervention, feeling was slowly returning to my legs.
Ryan had been feeding me intel about the company's death spiral.
When I'd originally helped the pack through my consulting firm, he'd been my primary contact.
I'd saved his ass more times than I could count over the years, and we'd built real trust.
After learning what Cassian had done to me, he'd volunteered to be my inside source.
As he put it: "Some lines you just don't cross, Alpha or not."
