Ten years later, the memories still cut deep.
I'd bought Mom's favorite persimmons to bring to her grave—one last visit to tell her I'd be joining her soon.
But first, I had something to retrieve from Damien's office. Something important.
Back when Mom was still alive, before the disease took hold, she absolutely adored Damien.
This was when we were still head-over-heels in love, when our mate bond felt unbreakable.
She'd driven out to this old pack shrine in the mountains—one of those ancient places where wolves had prayed to the Moon Goddess for centuries.
She came back with two matching protection totems, hand-carved from sacred oak and blessed under the full moon.
She'd tucked Damien's birthday inside the male wolf figure, mine inside the female one.
"For the Goddess's protection," she'd told me, pressing the warm wood into my hands. "So true mates can weather any storm together."
When I brought them to Damien, the stubborn ass refused to take his own totem. Instead, he snatched up mine, grinning at the delicate she-wolf carved into the surface.
"Look at that fierce expression," he'd teased, holding it up beside my face. "She's got your attitude—beautiful and ready to bite anyone who gets too close."
"When I see her, I think of you. And I never want to stop thinking of you."
That totem had sat on his desk for years—through our breakup, our mating ceremony, all the bitter fights and cold silences that followed.
But I couldn't let him keep it. Not when I was about to die. Knowing Damien, he'd probably throw it in the trash the moment I was gone, just another reminder of what he considered his "pathetic" youth.
Mom had blessed that totem for me. It needed to come home, to rest beside her headstone under the Moon Goddess's watch.
When I walked into his office, Damien was staring at his phone—my interview from this morning playing on repeat, the part where blood dripped from my nose as I casually mentioned dying.
He looked up when I entered, tossed the phone aside without a word. No questions, no concern. Just that familiar cold indifference.
But when I glanced at his desk, my heart sank. The spot where my totem had always sat was empty.
I frowned, trying to keep my voice steady. "Where's my totem?"
