The courtroom-style classroom buzzed with anticipation. The university's annual Legal vs. Forensic Debate was about to begin, and students from the law and forensic departments filled the room. The tension between the two fields had always been strong—one relied on argument, the other on evidence.
Aarav Mehta, third-year law student and undefeated debate champion, leaned back in his chair, tapping his pen against the desk. He had participated in these debates before, and every time, the forensic team tried—and failed—to prove that science held more weight than the law. He smirked. This would be easy.
On the opposite side of the room, Ishani Rao adjusted her notes, her sharp eyes scanning the audience. She was a first-year forensic science student, but that didn’t mean she was here to lose. This debate wasn’t just about winning—it was about proving that science was the only real truth.
The moderator stepped forward. “Welcome to the annual Legal vs. Forensic Debate. Our topic for today: ‘In the pursuit of justice, which is more reliable—law or forensic science?’”
Aarav rolled his shoulders. Time to crush whoever dared to stand against him.
“Representing the law, we have Aarav Mehta.”
He flashed a polite smile and leaned forward.
“And representing forensic science, we have Ishani Rao.”
Aarav’s smirk faltered slightly as he looked at his opponent. He had expected one of the older students, but this girl—this first-year student—was standing tall with a fierce determination in her eyes.
Ishani caught his gaze and raised an eyebrow. Surprised? Good.
“Let the debate begin,” the moderator announced.
Aarav spoke first. “The law exists to serve justice. Forensics is just a tool—a supporting element. In the end, no matter how much evidence you have, if it can’t be presented in court properly, it’s meaningless.”
Ishani didn’t hesitate. “Forensics isn’t just a tool—it’s the foundation of truth. The law can be twisted, manipulated, and misused. Evidence doesn’t lie—people do.”
A murmur spread through the audience. Aarav’s lips curled in amusement. She’s bold.
“Well,” Aarav countered, “if evidence was all that mattered, then why do wrongful convictions exist? People misinterpret evidence all the time. That’s why the law is superior—it ensures due process.”
Ishani leaned forward. “And what happens when the law is used to protect the guilty? How many cases have been thrown out on technicalities, despite forensic evidence proving the crime?”
Their words cut through the room like blades. The debate turned into rapid-fire arguments—law vs. evidence, justice vs. procedure. The crowd was enthralled.
Then, Ishani smirked. “Tell me, Aarav—if you were accused of murder, would you trust the law to save you, or would you pray that forensic evidence proves your innocence?”
For the first time, Aarav hesitated. Just for a fraction of a second.
And Ishani saw it.
The timer buzzed, signaling the end of the debate. The audience erupted into applause, some siding with Aarav, others cheering for Ishani’s fierce arguments.
Aarav stood, adjusting his blazer, and stepped toward Ishani. “Not bad.”
She crossed her arms. “Not bad? That’s all?”
Aarav smirked. “For a first-year, you talk big.”
Ishani held his gaze. “For a third-year, you’re awfully overconfident.”
They stared at each other for a long moment before Aarav chuckled. “I’ll be seeing you around, forensic girl.”
Ishani tilted her head. “Try not to lose sleep over my arguments, lawyer.”
Neither of them knew that this was just the beginning.
