Aarav wasn’t the kind of person who got emotional over a case. Emotions were distractions. And right now, he had no time for distractions.
He sat in an empty faculty office, flipping through old legal files. The case against Samar Kaul was buried deep in the archives—deliberately, it seemed.
Then, finally, he found it.
Case No. 847/2018
State vs. Samar Kaul
Charge: Fraud, Extortion, and Coercion
Aarav’s jaw tightened. So Kaul wasn’t just some random criminal. He was part of something bigger.
Footsteps approached. He didn’t look up. “Agar tum police ho toh warrant dikhao. Aur agar forensic girl ho toh chup chap baithe raho.” ("If you're the police, show me a warrant. If you’re the forensic girl, sit quietly.")
Ishani snorted. “Agar forensic girl saboot le kar aayi ho toh?” ("And if the forensic girl brought evidence?")
Aarav finally looked at her. “Toh bolo.” ("Then speak.")
She dropped a folder in front of him. “Samar Kaul ka DNA match confirm ho gaya hai.” ("Samar Kaul’s DNA match is confirmed.")
Aarav leaned back. “Matlab woh wahan tha. Par usne khoon kiya?” ("So he was there. But did he commit the murder?")
Ishani crossed her arms. “Agar kiya hota toh uske khoon ke alawa aur saboot milte. But it looks like he was injured while escaping.”
Aarav exhaled. “Matlab koi aur bhi tha.” ("That means someone else was there too.")
For a moment, neither spoke. Then Ishani leaned over, glancing at his files. “Toh Kaul ka kya scene hai?” ("So what’s Kaul’s deal?")
Aarav’s eyes darkened. “Woh sirf ek petty criminal nahi hai. Six years pehle, uspar fraud aur extortion ke charges lage the. Bhatia sir ne uske khilaf gawahi di thi.” ("He wasn’t just a petty criminal. Six years ago, he was charged with fraud and extortion. Professor Bhatia testified against him.")
Ishani frowned. “Motive toh solid hai.” ("That’s a solid motive.")
Aarav shook his head. “Nahi. Agar badla lena hota toh woh sirf Bhatia sir ko maar kar chala jata. Par usne saboot bhi chhoda.” ("No. If it was just revenge, he would’ve killed Bhatia sir and left. But he left evidence behind.")
Ishani narrowed her eyes. “Toh iska matlab woh jaan bujh ke humari nazar mein aana chahta tha?” ("So you think he wanted to be noticed?")
Aarav’s gaze turned sharp. “Ya phir koi aur hai jo use use kar raha hai.” ("Or someone else is using him.")
Samar Kaul wasn’t the mastermind. He was just another pawn in a bigger game.
And they needed to find out who was playing it.
As they stepped out of the building, Ishani shivered slightly. The air was colder than usual, or maybe it was just the weight of the case.
Aarav walked beside her, silent, his hands in his pockets.
“You don’t get affected by this, do you?” she asked suddenly.
He didn’t look at her. “Affected by what?”
“The case. The murder. Your friend being accused.”
Aarav exhaled slowly, his face unreadable. “Feelings aur logic ek saath kaam nahi karte.” ("Feelings and logic don’t work together.")
Ishani frowned. “That’s a cold way of thinking.”
Aarav finally looked at her, and for a brief moment, his eyes weren’t just cold—they were empty.
“Killer ko pakadne ke liye insaan ko thoda cold-hearted hona padta hai.” ("To catch a killer, you have to be a little cold-hearted.")
Ishani didn’t break eye contact. “Ya shayad tum pehle se hi ho.” ("Or maybe you already are.")
Aarav smirked slightly, but it didn’t reach his eyes. He didn’t deny it.
She watched him carefully. The lawyer everyone feared in the courtroom—the ruthless, calculating Aarav Mehta—wasn’t just an act.
This was who he was.
Or at least, who he wanted the world to think he was.
That night, just as Ishani was locking up the forensics lab, she got a message from an unknown number.
“Stop digging. Or you’ll end up just like him.”
She stared at the screen, her heartbeat slowing.
A second later, an image followed.
A photo of her and Aarav at the café earlier that day.
Her fingers tightened around her phone. Someone was watching them.
She took a deep breath, then typed one word in response.
“No.”
Seconds later, another message flashed.
“Then you’ve been warned.”
