"Why are you staring at me like that?" I ask.
"Because you're fucking annoying," Alpha Barnes sighs.
He starts making his way towards the bed. The first thing to come off is his cut. It lands on my couch with a heavy thud.
"What are you doing?"
After what happened tonight, I don't want him here. I need to be alone to think my way out of the shit I'm in. If my dad sees him coming here, he's going to give Vince a reason to act worse than he already has.
"Taking my shirt off. I'm tired from running around in circles all night looking for your ass," the t-shirt comes off, and he starts working on his boots. I lock the door and set an alarm. "No argument, moonlight?"
"You're going to do whatever the fuck you want regardless of what I say, so yeah. No argument. The bed is big enough for you."
I go over to the couch and sit down, feeling exhausted. Not physically, but everything else has been weighing on me. Perry was right; now that we have time to think about all the dumb shit we've done, it's heavy. I need to stop listening to her talk about her ten-step program. She's getting inside my head, and I hate it.
I sit back and look up at the projection on the ceiling. He comes and sits next to me without saying a word. I let my head fall to the side to look at him. He looks back at me with a smile.
"I don't know how to help you. I just want to kill your father. This isn't working for me."
I don't say anything in response to that. I stand up to get some sleepwear. I change into a pair of shorts and an oversized T-shirt. I head towards the door. He can stay here if he wants.
"Where are you going?" he growls.
"I'm going to sleep downstairs. Help yourself," I open the door about an inch before he pulls me back and slams it shut.
"You're not even going to try?"
"You're accusing me of that after what you just said. You want things to go your way, and that's never going to work between us. I am very uncomfortable with our situation right now, and I don't want you to be here."
He stares at me for a while and then turns around to get his things. I don't know what to say to him. I don't know how to make him understand how important it is to me. I'm taking a big risk being around him.
His aura becomes threatening, but I'm not going to do a single thing to appease him. He puts his shoes back on and his shirt. I stay by the door to let him leave.
"This is what you're choosing?" he asks. "To be alone?"
"I'm not afraid to be alone, Alpha Barnes. I came back for a reason, and I would rather die than not fulfill it. I don't expect you to understand. I'm not asking anything from you. I don't need you for anything other than this. You know what to do so you can find what you're looking for."
"What is it you want? Why did you really come back?" he scoffs.
"It should be obvious," I look up at him. "This city will be mine, or I'm going to burn it to the ground. I don't need you for that. Please leave. And don't come back here unless you're authorized."
He scoffs and lets out a dry laugh before pulling the door open. He closes it again, and I groan.
"Tonight started off so well," he says quietly.
"And you fucked it up," I confirm. He sighs and turns to look at me with a glare. His eyes are glowing red.
"Because I introduced you to the most important person in my life," he nods.
"That's correct. It won't change anything. I need you to understand that I can't choose you simply because I don't know how even to choose myself. I have given up too much to let something as stupid as sentiment come between me and what I deserve.
"I am going to let things play out my way and no one else's. If you want to become an obstacle, know that it won't be the first time I cut a piece of my soul out for this. You made it clear that you're not interested in respecting my wishes. I need you to leave."
"This is how it's going to be every time you don't have your way?"
"Every single fucking time," I confirm.
He rips open the door and steps out. I follow after him until he gets to the front door. I lock it as soon as he's out and make a reminder to change the back locks. As I'm going back up to my room, my phone buzzes. I look down to see it's not a registered number.
"Wilde," I answer.
"Hey, it's me. Sam," her voice sounds resigned. "Were you serious about what you said?"
"Yeah, I am serious," I sigh and sit on the edge of my bed.
"You okay?"
"Your brother is a fucking idiot."
"I told him that ambushing his special guest wasn't the best idea. When I saw you, I thought we were all dead. I remember when we first met. You almost killed me, and you were severely wounded. I thought I was going for an easy kill."
"I don't want to talk about this anymore. If you're coming back, we can't bring up the fact that we know Arsen personally. We have to keep it professional. Let's meet up tomorrow. We'll need documentation. I have some stuff I need to clear up anyway."
"If this works, I'm going to owe you."
"Make sure the omega bitches in your brother's pack keep their hands to themselves, and we're even."
"You got it," she sighs.
"Listen, there's an apartment in Galaxia. I just put it up for sale. I can take it off the market. It's a two-bedroom. I used the second bedroom as my closet. I'll take it off the market and lease it to you. You shouldn't be in that part of town. You're an alpha's daughter. Nothing else matters."
"You've been away from pack life too long, Luna Wolfe. You know that's not what tradition dictates. The mate laws are absolute. The only ones that can't be changed. I'm just grateful I don't have to serve."
"You're an alpha's daughter, Sam. All we do is serve. Alphas are kind of dumb and they're guys."
"Thanks, We can call the scar on my face even,"
