The custom Skyline that pulls up in front of my new building is insane. It's blacked out. Black matte paint, black rockstar rims, the tint is as dark as it can go, and I'm willing to bet she's done some amazing work to the engine. Roman is going to love this thing when he sees it. Sam comes out of it dressed professionally and ready for the interview I promised. Verona looks up at me and clears her throat.
"Luna Wolfe. Chief Wolfe," Sam greets us properly.
"It's good to see you again, Sammy. How have you been?" Verona asks.
I've never heard this tone in her voice before. There's absolute authority in it and zero vulnerability. Warmth floods through me in learning that she trusts me enough to let her guard down. It's not something that happens very often for me and it makes me feel good.
"I've been okay," she says, glancing in my direction.
"I just want to apologize for the way things ended before. I assumed you were here to spy on us, and I didn't even give you a chance to explain yourself. I'm also sorry you found out about your parents the way you. It was very unprofessional of me."
Wow. That was sincere. Sam looks at me not knowing what the hell she's talking about. I'll explain once all of this is over and we get to eat. I am starting to get hungry. I was late for a pack meeting this morning and only had a bagel.
"It's cool. Shit happens," she shrugs.
"You two really are friends," Verona laughs. We're not, that's just the default sloagans for rogues all over the world. Difficult should be our middle names. All off us.
"She can't give you any information, so don't ask," I warn my sister. "Alpha Barnes and a couple of my executives are going to be here in a bit. Sam, I have a proposition for you before you sign your life over to the cops."
"Thank you, Luna Wolfe," she grins at the way Verona is glaring at me. "Fair warning. He's been in a mood."
"Follow me," Verona waves her over.
The two of them disappear into one of the finished rooms. I take a seat at the receptionist's desk and start reviewing everything Perry sent me. Some of the new guys are very young, but they're lycans, and Roy wants them here. Perry also mentioned that Jonas wants to extend to the vampire side of the bridge.
It'll be good for our census. It might even open us up for better positions in the royal court. Even in the middle of a war, the vision of peace is more than clear. It feels good, and at the same time, I feel like we're counting our chickens a little too soon. I don't want to think about the old man but this fear of him is not something we're going to be able to shake off. We're all making moves to protect ourselves and those we love.
"Miss Wilde?" I look up to see the giant Lycans have arrived. I stand up to gather my things. There is no doubt in my mind that she sent the biggest lycans she could find just to make fun of me.
"Good morning," I greet them.
The four of them look down at me and nod. Yup, she's watching the live camera feed from one of her big ass castles, laughing her ass off at the moment. There is no doubt in my mind.
Alpha Barnes arrives with a group of his wolves. The Lycans move to stand behind me. I link my hands and rest them in front of me as they gather themselves and come inside. His eyes scan the room before they land on me. He seems upset.
"Welcome to Lycan Tech Tower, Magique City's Region," I step forward and offer him my hand. He clears his throat and takes it. "Now that we're all here let's head up to the main floor. Once renovations and all our equiment is setup, I'll be more than happy to give you all the grand tour. Please, follow me."
And that's how I ended up in an elevator with ten giant men, only being five feet two inches tall. Maybe five six with my heels. I can feel them all staring at me. I keep myself composed even when the glass doors open, and all I want to do is run.
My team is waiting for us in the biggest conference room here. Ed's eyes widen when he sees them all following close behind me. I try not to laugh when he opens the door for us. I go to the head of the table and set my things down.
His girls pass out the profiles we're going to be reviewing today. They also set out glasses of cold water and set the pitchers. They all stand back by their stations, waiting for their next instructions.
I've missed my assistant. I've missed coming into the office everyday. I mean, sure, I like wearing casual clothes and running around the city getting reacquainted with my wolves, but this is the only thing that keeps me sane.
"Perry asked me to bring you this," Ed says, setting a new tablet down in front of me, along with a package containing what I assume are the latest devices Lycan Tech will be releasing soon. I take everything out. "I've already set everything up for you. They're good to go. She also wants you to wear the glasses now."
"She's connected, isn't she?" I look up at him.
"Yes," he confirms, pressing his lips together, trying not to laugh.
I groan and reach for the glasses case. As soon as I open it, the front lights up. I slip them on, and it tells me it's fully charged. Then it informs me that the Lycan Queen Pernicious Prince is on the line.
"Press the button on the right side of your glasses so I can see what it's like being as small as you. Can you see over the table?" Perry bursts into laughter.
"Bitch, I will hang up on you, right now," I growl lowly. I press the button on the side, and it informs me that it's recording my call and what's in front of me. "Why are you even here?"
"I wanted to see how tiny you were compared to these oversized assholes," she says quietly. When I look up to make sure no one heard her, I find that the only one staring at me is Alpha Barnes. "Barnes looks like he wants to wrap his hands around your little neck and strangle you until you turn blue."
I don't reply because she might not be wrong. That or he wants to stick something in my mouth until I turn blue. Ed gives me a rundown of the new tablet and shows me that he's opened the files I need before taking the old tablet away.
This is actually very nice. I love that Jonas went with the sharp edges over the curved ones Perry usually uses. The black isn't glossy, but it is sparkly, and the new screen protectors are gel—finally, someone who considers my suggestions.
"Tell the King, thank you for the upgrade."
"You're welcome," his voice comes through. I shut my eyes, trying my best not to laugh.
"Are you ready to meet your new branch?" I ask them.
"Yes, start with a roll call," the King takes over for her. "We need proper introductions. I'll make sure my Queen stops being a little shit."
"Luna Wolfe. Chief Wolfe," Sam greets us properly.
