Helen’s POV
I felt stronger leaving True Mates pack this time.
Justin let me shower and pick through the kitchen like I was a free willed wolf yet again. Maybe he trusted me again, or maybe it was because Randy was back to following me around like my own personal guard dog.
I ate, got changed into a clean, long gown, and we took a shuttle over to the Lone Wolf pack.
Justin stood up the entire drive, staring out the front window while I curled up on the plastic seats in the back, leaning against the window with Russo and Randy on the seats nearby.
Everyone else was dressed in tuxedos, outdoing my thin and wobbly frame in my tan, sequins gown. I adjusted my strappy heels, not wanting to wear them in the first place, but starting another argument with my Lycan mate didn’t seem feasible either.
I leaned forward, whispering to Russo, “Why are we going to Lone Wolf pack?”
The Fae adjusted in his chair awkwardly, trying not to meet my eyes. “I’m not really supposed to—”
“Cut it out,” Justin snapped, staring bullet holes through the Fae in the bench in front of mine.
Russo buried his face into his palms and I sulked back into my seat, frustrated with my disgruntled mate. He acts like I’m not allowed to talk to anyone except for him, like I truly want this pack to fail.
I fought my first mate over the protection and the creation of this pack. He should have some trust in me that I at least deserve some answers. But still, Justin lets his Alpha aura slip and gave me a harsh grimace of a look in some kind of warning.
I had no intention of ruining today for him, or for anyone else.
Especially myself.
The shuttle came to a screeching stop and Randy took the Fae with him on his way out. Justin came to the back to where I was sitting, a cold and callous look in his lovely Lycan irises.
“Come on, mate,” he said, although I could see he wanted to growl those words. “We have a ceremony to attend.”
I kept my head down but took his hand. Immediately, Justin pulled me into his side, keeping a stiff forearm against the small of my back. There were Lone Wolf pack members everywhere, along with some from True Mates that I recognized.
Ezequiel and Martha were among those watching as my mate and I strode to the platform in the yard of Juden’s estate. It was weird being back here after the ordeal I went through with the Alpha King and my father, the two of them baiting me to the post and whipping me senseless.
They wanted Justin to hurt through me and after the mess it caused, I’d say it worked.
Justin held my hand as he addressed all the wolves at last.
“I am Justin, Alpha of True Mates pack. Son of the deceased Alpha King Juden. I am taking over the Alpha position of Lone Wolf and I will merge it into my pack, True Mates. Anyone willing to challenge me over the title, has three days to do so, during the ceremony period.”
I looked out at the faces of the wolves in shock, in anger over this shift, but no one dared to step forward and challenge Justin right away.
I didn’t doubt that eventually, someone would try to challenge my mate’s title.
It’s been made clear already that they wanted Randy as alpha anyways, but the beta and the best friend of my mate seemed uninterested in that job now.
Especially after the fight it caused between them.
“Every wolf here is welcome to merge into True Mates, or go rogue,” Justin says, his voice rumbling. “Tonight, the celebration begins with tonight’s bonfire and dinner and ends in three nights, on the full moon.”
The whispers begin, everyone aware of what the full moon does to the Last Lycan.
They won’t have to worry about taking the brunt of his rage though, that will be my job like it always was. I leaned into my mate and his arm around me tightened, giving me a small semblance of hope that we could be back to normal soon.
Justin dismissed the pack and while they talked amongst themselves, Justin wrapped his palm around my arm and shoved me towards the house, stopping when he veered to the right, taking me to the courtyard behind the estate.
When the steps led underground, I whimpered slightly, recalling this place well.
It’s Juden’s barracks. I’ve been in here before, for lots of things I was never responsible for, and once because I saved the wizards. I hated being back but I didn’t fight my mate, letting him shove me into the cell in the corner.
I winced, seeing my old stains of blood marking the floor and the walls from where the wizard that Alpha King Juden used against me was tormenting what was left of my spirit.
I kneel on the floor when Justin releases my arm, my hands shivering at the cold, damp temperature of these wretched barracks. I hate Lone Wolf estate, I hate these barracks, and I hate the look Justin gives me when he slams the cell door shut.
“What are you doing?” Randy griped, rushing into the barracks beside Justin. “Come on, you just announced your Alpha King now and you already throw her away into a cell?”
My mate looked frustrated enough already and stormed out. I reached through the bars to stop Randy, already seeing them start their typical bickering argument. I couldn’t stand to see them argue about me anymore.
“Please, don’t be mad at him,” I pleaded. “He’s stressed out, Randy, and he’s already frustrated. Just let him calm down. He won’t keep me in here for the next three days.”
Randy’s eyes flickered to the far wall and a smile pulled at his lips. “You’re right. He won’t.”
The beta went to the wall and grabbed the keys hanging on a chain just a few paces away. He came back, popping the key into the lock.
The door gusted open at his will and I already felt the relief fill my chest at once.
I didn’t want to piss off Justin more, but I was desperate to look at anything that isn’t rusty steel bars. I settled with the kind beta and followed him out of the cell, peering outside to see no trace of my mate anywhere.
Randy waved me with him and we walked down the familiar streets, past pack members who appeared unphased by the shift of authority. No one was packing or moving, attempting to go rogue. It looked like a good sign and for now, I was content with this new shift.
I am the Luna still, even if people still held the same frustrating view of me as a Tiger Lily wolf, a tri-color, and not the beautiful, pure Snow White that I’ve grown into.
Randy nudged me towards a bar, the lights dimmed and the windows blackened. “I love this place,” he breathed, charging toward the rickety door. “Come on, let’s go get a drink. I’m the beta and you’re the Luna, we might get some drinks for free.”
At that promise, I followed him inside and we took two of the many empty stools.
Randy ordered a large, fruity drink that came out in a bowl made for fish, not for liquor. My stomach ached at the sweet smell of it invading my nostrils. There was no way we were going to finish this drink together and still be able to walk straight.
I took the first straw anyways, knowing Justin will realize I’m not in my little cell and come looking for me. It would be better to face his wrath while drunk.
I swallowed a long, thick gulp and felt the alcohol burn down my throat.
Randy’s eyes went wide at the dent I already made in this large drink.
“Damn, do you want the whole thing, Luna?”
I snickered a laugh but looked at the massive size of it anyways. I should be able to drown myself into this outlet pretty well. Justin won’t be happy with me either way so I might as well indulge.
“Yeah,” I say at last. “I’ll take this one alone.”
