Helen POV
Randy helped me sit up while Justin had his claws halfway out into Oscar’s throat. I cringed at my mates ruthlessness returning. He presses the rogue’s back into the table.
“Beta, take my mate to the barracks and leave her there this time,” Justin snarled.
I furrowed my brow, crawling toward him, but Randy stopped me.
“Justin,” I pleaded, confused. “What is wrong? This isn’t my fault and—”
“Go!” Justin roared. “I am not letting you skate by the fact you wandered away from my pack before. You will stay int hat cell until I say otherwise. I need time to figure out what to do about this new pixie problem.”
“It’s not a problem,” Oscar panted. It’s an honor. They are honoring your mate. How could you sit here and separate them like this?”
“She is mine!”
I flinched but abided by his wishes. I walked with Randy back towards the barracks at the estate, leaving the lively bonfire and dinner. I stalked further away from my mate but could still feel his lapsing anger flow over me.
Keeping my head down, Randy ushered me into my cell.
“He is getting better,” the kind beta told me. “Just give him more time to get past everything, Luna.”
“How long is he going to wait before he lets me tell him the truth?” I panted, clinging to the bars. “I didn’t do anything worth this treatment. I never wanted to hurt him. Never.”
“But you did,” Randy said in a mild whisper. “He almost died, Luna. I know you love him and I know he loves you, but it’s jut not going to end well for anyone if you try to push him too soon into forgiveness. He will only retaliate.”
“He would never hurt me,” I mumbled to myself.
“He wouldn’t,” Randy added, moving towards to doorway out. “But his Lycan has even taken a bite out of me before so you should be careful. Just in case.”
I nodded at his advice, already feeling so defeated against my mate’s fuming Lycan.
“I’ll bring you some blankets in a minute. Do you want something warm to drink down here? It’s cold.”
I nodded at his offer, at least happy the beta is worried about me. Justin is just furious about the pixies taking a liking to me for whatever reason. Maybe it’s because of the vampire issues in Las Vegas.
Or maybe the wizards that put us in this whole trouble to begin with.
Either way, I doubt the pixies are really anything to worry about. We’re safe with them being around and for some reason, I like having them fluttering around the pack. It brings more than one species together, like the wizards are around our pack now.
We were breaking down barriers of pack norms and I thought that was a great thing.
My mate just saw new threats.
I finally settled on my cot, seeing a small pixie perch on the horizontal bars of my little cell. Leaning against the wall, I watched the pixie watch me. She’s so small and precious, but in a big group of them, I knew they could probably scare of predators.
I thought they were stars earlier when I was more tipsy with alcohol.
Maybe that is one way they have been able to survive for so long.
“Where are your friends?” I ponder after a long moment. “Why are you all alone? Is it because my mate? I know it’s hard for him to be around sometimes but he’s pretty harmless. He just has a hard time trusting new species.”
And his mate—but that’s beside the point.
The pixie rushed forward, her wings fluttering in front of my face until I held out my palm. Bringing her to my cheek, I let her whisper into my ear like I had seen Oscar doing earlier.
She had a high squeaky voice and a muttered little whisper.
“He is going to banish us from this land, Queen.”
I sulked at the sadness in her voice. “He just is afraid of the unknown, that’s all. Where do you and your people normally live?”
“We were staying in the hollows of the trees in Hullin Woods, but there were these wolves out there, they cut down the forest and built a wall and homes inside of it. They wouldn’t let us in after that.”
“I’m sorry,” I panted. “Maybe he will let me find a new home for you.”
“What about the others, Queen? They took half of our people prisoner inside the walls. They want to capture all of us and use us to produce pixie dust. The magical qualities it possess fuels those evil rouges to be more powerful.”
I sat back in thought. “Okay, I can try to convince him to let us free the others. I can’t do anything behind his back, little pixie. My mate is already angry with me.”
“Why?” she purred. “You are a kind soul. That is why we chose you as our queen. Your reaction to our pixie dust was like an allergy. That means you are the only one who could never use us because it would hurt you. Why would that Lycan let you sleep in a cage?”
“He thinks I did something bad. I didn’t, but I can see how he can believe that I have.”
“What did you do?”
I sat back and told the story in full, trying to explain the past we had with the wizards and with Alpha King Juden and my father. Describing their hatred for Justin and I ached.
I wanted to explain how Juden’s wizard had forced me to stab Justin, but I hiccupped back a cry in attempt. No one, not even my own mate believed me!
Why should I expect this little pixie to?
She fluttered around my little palm and then laid back on my shoulder. After exhausting ourselves in planning to help her people and trying to explain why my mate hates me, I heard the barracks door open from outside.
Justin shuffled into the room and undid my cell door, dropping a few blankets on the foot of my cot. He sneered at the sight of my pixie, sleeping soundly on my shoulder, and shook his head in fury.
“Make it leave,” he growled.
I covered her with my hand carefully, trying to protect her from waking up to this angry Lycan.
“She is harmless and she is keeping me company, Justin. What is wrong?”
“I don’t know what they want,” he grumbled. “They could ruin this whole pack joining ceremony. I don’t want them to be here anymore and I’ve asked Oscar to leave with them in the morning as well.”
“They haven’t done anything against us, Justin. Why are you being so harsh?”
“If I am cold towards them, it is because my trust in others has ended poorly,” he added, glancing at me sideways with a narrow, accusatory look.
I waved it aside. There is no talking to this stubborn man.
“Hello?” Randy panted, coming into the cell next.
He held another set of blankets like my mate, but he brought a warm mug of herbal tea. I took it with a smile and thanked the beta who met eyes with Justin next. They shared a long, silent glare.
“Why is it always you coming to visit my mate?” Justin said in deep exhale. “You know she belongs to me, right? Yet here you are, visiting her at night with blankets and tea.”
Randy hardly seemed offended by the accusation. “Well, I knew she would be cold and since you are the one saying she can’t sleep in the estate like a normal Luna, then I figured I would protect her.”
My mate growled and I rolled my eyes at the ordeal. The little pixie on my shoulder had kicked awake in a panic but I took her in my hands, trying to calm her down.
It lead the Alpha and beta to calm down as well and they both looked deeply into my new friend.
“What is wrong? Are you okay?”
She came to my cheek, leaning on me slightly so she could whisper in my ear. “The rogues that hunted us, they’re on their way here! We are not safe, Queen.”
“What is it?” Justin asked, unable to even hear her little demure volume.
“Rogues,” I mumble, my chest sinking.
Justin stood straight, taking his beta by the arm and pulling him close. “You stay here and protect my mate. I’m going to see how our new pack works together against a threat.”
I sulked at the sight of Justin shifting in his Lycan, his eyes dark and furious and pointed at me.
I set the pixie aside and put my tea on the ground, coming to my knees before the Last Lycan. Looking up at his broad, angry stance, I knew Justin’s Lycan didn’t trust me the slightest.
“I love you,” I purred, “be safe, please.”
His Lycan only caressed my cheek with his claws but stormed out without a second glance.
I know now for sure that Justin isn’t the one I need to earn trust.
It’s the Last Lycan himself.
