Justin POV
I left Helen as she slept, and she was on my mind the rest of the morning. I should have kissed her. I should have told her I loved her and her commitment to being my mate, even when my Lycan still lacked trust with her.
I didn’t do any such thing and guilt was heavy on my mind after that.
Randy finished typing out a letter to return with the rogue I absolutely demolished in a beating this morning. I wanted to kill him, but then who would send my message to William and the huntsman?
This would be a simple affair, and I would try to convince my Lycan to impregnate my mate before William can plan a backlash of action against our pack. Helen seemed so willing, and excited, and it truly made me fall in love with her all over again.
Why wouldn’t my Lycan just forgive her first so we could move past her one betrayal?
I could feel him denying that as a possibility and I sunk into my seat, Randy watching and noticing me going through this inner turmoil.
“You okay, Alpha?”
I shrugged, upset but fully aware that this was a necessary conversation after the one we had last night. Randy loved my mate like a sister, and sometimes I felt he was more protective of her than he was to me, but I understood why.
Ever since the night she stabbed me, Randy has been going up against me in belief that maybe Helen didn’t have a choice but to stab her mate. It was hard for me to understand, but Randy was firm in his position.
I didn’t want to act like his feelings about tonight’s event wouldn’t matter.
“Come on,” I exhaled at long last. “You know I have to do it eventually.”
“Yes but not while your Lycan is still angry with her. He could break her neck and her bones. I don’t want to see her get hurt and if she does, you know it will hurt you, Justin. I don’t want that, either.”
I nodded with his rational explanation. It made a lot of sense but it had to be tonight.
“You are going to do it anyways, I know that,” he puffed. “And don’t doubt that I won’t look over that little Lycan pup like he’s my own, but I can’t be sure if she is even capable of handling that kind of stress.”
I leaned in, curiously hearing this position from my closest confidant. “What do you mean?”
“You found her as a tri-color Tiger Lily, Justin. She has blossomed into an amazing, white and pure wolf, and she is strong, but if I didn’t find her first when she was attacked by that rogue William sent, then I can’t be sure that she would still be with us today.”
I looked sideways at him, knowing he is right but also sure of my mate’s strength. “She is strong enough to handle this, I know she is. She is amazing and strong and has the endurance to match my own. She can carry my pup.”
He shrugged, his eyes faraway. “She wants to, doesn’t she?”
I couldn’t fight back my grin even if I wanted or intended to. “She is excited. She is already wearing this cute little dress and I know it’s because she wants to do it, too. She will be a great mother, Randy.”
“I know that,” he sniffled. “We all do. I just want to make sure your Lycan is as kind to her as you’ve been trying to be. You love her. Just remember that when you hand him the reigns tonight.”
There was a hoard of footsteps rushing down the hallway and when I turned in my seat to see the commotion, I saw my warriors who were meant to guard the estate at the door now.
My anger flickered inside of me. “What are you all doing here? You are supposed to make sure my mate doesn’t try to escape!”
The warrior up front bowed his head. “Alpha… we can’t seem to find the Luna. She isn’t in bed.”
My brows knit. “What do you mean, you can’t find her?”
“Tell us what happened, right now, and don’t skip a single detail,” Randy added.
The warrior spoke again, his voice hazed in confusion. “Well, Alpha. Beta. I had the chef cook the Luna her lunch like you requested we have done, but when they brought it up to the room, she wasn’t there.”
I stood from my chair. “What about the bathroom? The library?”
“We looked at every room in the estate,” the warrior whispered. “Three times, to be exact.”
I kicked the chair out of my way and pushed past them all. Randy was at my side all the way back to the house and then into the bedroom. I practically kicked a hole in the door as we entered, seeing the room in order and the hallway untouched by her scent recently.
Nothing about this scene made any sense.
“Do you feel that?” Randy asked.
I looked at my beta, trying to tame my focus but I was too upset to assess anything even close to resembling a clue about where she went and how she got there.
“It’s some kind of breeze. There shouldn’t be a draft here.”
Randy nodded me into the hall and we walked up to a window, the glass shattered all over the floor and creating just enough space to crawl through. I rolled my eyes, my Lycan furiously ripping through my head.
“How could she escape?! She wanted tonight to happen and now she’s running away from me?!”
Randy shoved my a little harder than I prefer and I growled in innate response. He didn’t seem offended but instead, he pointed to the floor where we stood. I lifted up my boots and watched the thousands of little glass shards sink into the fibers of the floor rug.
“The glass is inside, Alpha. That means the window was broken from the outside.”
My raging, unkind pulse slowed in horrible realization. “She was taken…”
“Yes, Alpha. Seems like she was. By whom, though?”
I shook in a budding, stinging rage. “There’s no shortage to who would want to take my mate, but this has to be William. I just can’t pick up his rogue stench in the bedroom, or even in the hall and on the glass here.”
Randy nodded, leaning into the window frame and inhaling deeply. My senses are better than his as the Alpha and the Last Lycan, but I gave him the opportunity to see if he could find what I hopefully had missed.
“I can’t pick up William’s smell either,” he snarled. “This is really, really bad, Alpha.”
“I know that!”
I ran my hands through my hair and tried to settle down. Being this angry, with Randy of all people, wouldn’t do much. I had to be smart and fix this with stealth. Whoever took my mate might still be nearby in the woods.
“We have to go after her,” I growled. “Right now. Alert the entire pack that the last ceremonial event tonight is canceled until we can find the Luna.”
He nodded and hurried away, barking at the warriors to spread word and to send them out after my precious mate, their brave Luna, and the mother of my future Lycan pups.
Randy returned to my side and one at a time, we crawled out of the window carefully and faced the woods together. He was calmer than me, and that’s why we make the best pair of Alpha and beta.
“I’m coming for you, Helen,” I panted. “I love you.”
