Justin’s POV
“Do you smell that?” I asked, stopping the line of wolves on either side of me, each of us still combing through the woods to look for my mate. “It smells like her blood.”
A few warriors growled and ran froward, following the scent. It had been hard to find Helen after her scent was seemingly all over the woods, wiped on trees and scattered in the fields to throw us off.
William must have spread her scent everywhere to throw us off her trail, but this new scent was stronger, carrying through the wind from miles away. My Lycan roared inside of me, needing our mate back.
The full moon without her was too difficult and I fought him all night, losing half a day when I could have been looking for her! I’m making it up now, charging toward her scent of blood while Randy kept beside me, trying to keep me calm and hopeful.
“It will be okay,” Randy said, speaking low. “She’s strong, like you said. She will be okay.”
I shake my head, too disappointed to even begin to consider her strength. “I shouldn’t have left her side. I should have been with her, Randy. She’s my mate and she was taken—she was taken right behind my back. I should have protected her better.”
“You are doing the right thing now by searching day and night for her, Justin. You’re being a good mate.”
But that’s the problem. I haven’t been a good mate. I’ve been harsh with her since the night my father and her father conspired against us—the worst night of my life where she hurt me. I can still love her and want to be a great mate, if I can’t trust her, right?
I hung my head and wanted to fall forward and let my Lycan catch me so he could take things from this point onward. He would find Helen faster, get to her aid and bring her back to True Mates.
After all, she is the most purebred, amazing mate there ever could be.
The mate of a Lycan is a strong mate by nature, considering all we have done together, all we have overcome—and the things we have yet to overcome. I trust that we would overcome it all but I didn’t want to think of anything other than getting to her side right now.
“Alpha! Over here!”
I charged forward without needing any further explanation, seeing my warriors circle a shivering, pale little wolf in the grass. I recognized my mate right away and fell to her side, running my hands all over her bare body while trying to find out where she was hurt.
“Look at her ankle,” Randy growled, undoing his jacket so I could cover her up with it. I adjusted the fabric over her chests and her turned pelvis, none of my warriors brave enough to stare at her there anyways. “It’s like she’s been shot, Alpha.”
I ran my fingertips down her bones, feeling the clean prick of a spot. “Dammit. She’s been shot with something other than a bullet. It’s thin and…” I brush her face, not seeing her even react from my touch. “It’s knocked her out cold.”
“Alpha, here,” another warrior called.
I gave Randy a knowing look and he nodded, sitting beside my mate as she slept in a deep, unflinching trance. The warrior pointed at the little specs of blood in the grass, a trail leading deeper and deeper into the woods until I spotted something in the distance; a wall of sorts.
I ran a hand through my hair, tempted to storm William’s village behind the wall, but I could hear my mate groaning in the distance, releasing a soft whimper in her medicated sleep.
“I want warriors to stay vigilant in this area and to report to me when William is seen, understand me?” I asked the warrior beside me.
He bowed his head ins response and I hurried back to Helen, scooping her cold body into my arms and hiking back towards our pack lands. She nuzzled into my chest, her ankle trembling where I know something was meant to put her to sleep, meaning she fought back.
Of course she did. She’s my mate and she’s stronger than any rogue out there.
Her eyes started to open as we made it inside the estate, my warriors posted on all corners of the home, in every hallway leading to the bedroom, and then one or two set right outside just in case. I wouldn’t take any chances on losing her again.
“Ju—Just—”
“I know, sweet mate,” I purred, kisses her forehead. “I’m right here. I’m not leaving your side again, I promise.”
She nodded, her head falling back over my arm. I got her to the bathroom, stripped the jacket off her body and laid her in the bathtub. When the warm water surrounded her, she smiled vividly, humming as the warm water surrounded her.
I made sure to wash her properly, mud and scratches covering her whole body. She had defiantly been crawling on her hands and knees outside the wall of William’s village. I can’t even believe she got away before I was able to find her, but I was just happy she made it as far as she did.
I tuck her hair back, kissing her forehead so I could take her temperature with my lips, feeling that she had finally gotten back to a normal temperature.
“Helen, baby. Can you hear me?”
She only grumbled, opening her eyes for a second before they quickly fell back down.
“I need you to tell me what happened to you. What did William do? How did he take you?”
She slid onto her side, yawning as she opened her mouth to speak. “It—it wasn’t—”
“Alpha,” Randy called out into the bedroom. I drained the water and covered my mate with a towel, coming to the doorway to see my Beta’s face flushed and out of breath. “We have a problem.”
I looked to my poor mate, whispering to herself as though she could still see me sitting there with her. My heart fell at her somberness. I didn’t want another problem, I wanted to cuddle with my mate and make sure she felt safe.
“Dammit, Randy. What is it now?” I said at last, exhausted but my Lycan was looking for a fight. He didn’t like seeing Helen like that in the woods—it ached his black heart to think she would have died out there another night in the cold. “Is it about William?”
He shook his head in disagreement. “No, it’s about the Huntsman.”
Helen shrieked from the bathroom, screaming out as she struggled to stand, slipping and falling as she crawled out of the tub. I ran to her aid, wrapping her better in a towel while I managed to wrangle her into my arms.
She fell right into my hold and went numb, relaxed as her head rested perfectly against my shoulder.
“Baby, it’s okay now. You’re with me,” I purred. Looking to my Beta, he hated seeing her like this too. He has become just as protective of his Luna as I have about her being my mate. “What about the Huntsman, Randy? What were you saying before—”
She gasped, clawing at my chest and whimpering in my arms.
“He’s coming after me again,” she panted, fighting my hold around her body. “No, no, no—I have to get away, I have to run, I have to—”
“Shh, sweetheart. What are you talking about?”
“He took me,” she panted, recklessly afraid. “He came in our room and took me.”
If my Lycan wasn’t pissed before about what happened to her; he was now.
