                    Helen POV
I sit up quick in bed, screaming for help and calling for my mate in this cold, dirty dungeon. Justin tackles me in his arms, holding me tight to his chest while he used his arm under me to reach over and turn on the lamp.
The bedroom came into sight and I inhaled sharp, seeing that my reality was different from my horrible nightmare. At least, maybe it was a nightmare and maybe it was a memory.
“Justin,” I panted, confused while I rubbed my eyes to double check where I was. “Oh moon goddess, we’re home! How did I—where did we—when did this—”
“Please,” he grunted, pulling me against his chest. “It’s the middle of the night, Luna. Go back to sleep.”
I fell back into his hold and made sure I was flush against his chest, loving the fact that he was holding me like my mate should hold me again. It felt normal and loving and trusting between us like it hasn’t in so long.
I didn’t want to ruin it, but I knew we had to face William and make him pay for hurting those pixies. When Justin inevitably fell back asleep, I crawled out of bed and ran towards the library, needing to finish that damn book about the Huntsman.
He’s the only thing keeping me from killing that rogue anyways. I can defeat William with ease but the Huntsman and his hatred for us wolfen kind has to mean something of value. I can defeat him if only I knew why he wanted to kill us all.
I turned the corner towards the library and ran right into a familiar face, though it caught both of us off guard. Randy caught me by my wrist, his eyes wide once he steadied me upright. He peered down the hallway, seeing that Justin wasn’t with me, and gave me the older-brother look of disproval when he saw I was alone.
“Where do you think you are going? Why isn’t Justin with you?”
I hung my head and whispered merely, “I just needed to go to the library, Beta. I’m sorry.”
He tipped my chin up, a sad look on his face. “Hey, relax, Helen. Don’t be upset, I’m not scolding you, I’m just trying to keep you safe. We all are.”
I grumbled internally. “Whatever, Randy. I’ve been a prisoner for months. Don’t act like I’m worth protecting now.”
I charged past him, desperately needing to know how to defeat the Huntsman, and I wasn’t interested in arguing, in making friends or even sleeping beside my mate! I had to protect the pixies that were still alive and I had to end the Huntsman and William before they came back looking for trouble.
Looking for more pixies.
Looking for me.
Randy caught my shoulder instantly and pulled me back, turning me around quickly so I’d face his disappointed, wounded features. I sulked slightly at the idea that I’ve hurt him. I didn’t want that at all but I have a duty as a Luna to fix this all.
I didn’t want to fail anyone—especially myself.
“Will you just stop for a second,” he groaned. “You can be angry, Helen, but I have been on your side for a long time. I have disobeyed my Alpha at times just because you are the Luna. Don’t snap at me again please.”
I nodded, trying to catch my breath after becoming so furious, the weight of the world, of life and death, holding me back. “You’re right. I’m sorry, Randy. I’ve just got a lot on my mind.”
His eyes drifted to the floor and I winced, seeing him kneel and reach out for my ankle. He pulled it up and brushed his fingertips over the spot that has since bruised and blistered after the Huntsman shot me.
“This isn’t looking so good, Luna. You should go to Gwen the healer right away.”
I grumbled, “If I do, will you let me go to the library after?”
“Yes, I will accompany you there next. Justin hasn’t slept in days while we were looking for you. He needs to catch up on rest. I’ll get you back to him before morning.”
I agreed and followed him from the house, only noticing now I had a bit of a limp on my wounded ankle. Randy noticed and slowed his pace, approaching the home nearby where the healer had been staying.
He knocked once, waiting for a reply, but the door never opened. I tugged on his sleeve, seeing a little light in the distance, fluttering in and out of the trees.
“She’s probably asleep too, Randy,” I said. “But look, there’s a pixie. It will help me.”
He eventually nodded when it was clear our healer wasn’t going to wake up anytime soon. I called the pixie over, coming closer to see the little female encased in light highly distraught. She fell right off a limb, into my palms, and wept heavily in my hands.
Upon closer inspection, I recognized her as Freya.
I brushed back her little wings, leaving a trail of pixie dust on my fingertip. “Hey, what’s wrong? Why are you crying out here alone? Where are the others?”
She shook her head, doubling forward as she cried harder. “Queen, it’s just me. The others were all taken while the Lycan had been looking for you.”
My stomach twisted hard in my gut when I heard those words. “No… it’s not possible. There’s too many of you, how did they get them all?”
She looked up at me with wide, sad eyes. “They wanted to find you, to rescue you and the other pixies, and this wolf said he knew were you were taken. He led them away and when I woke up, I read the note that said they were going on a search for you, but they never came back.”
I shook my head, frustrated beyond measure. “I will find them, Freya. Trust me, I will.”
She wiped her eyes and nodded, standing on lousy legs. She fluttered up and sat on my shoulder, laying there while I turned to see my Beta with a stern look in his eyes.
“No way,” he griped. “You can’t go after them alone. Not right now. You’re not even healed, Luna. I can’t allow you to leave the pack.”
I swallowed hard but actually agreed with the Beta for now. My ankle was starting to throb more and I needed something to eat or I’d be sick. I looked to Freya, distraught on my shoulder still but holding it together.
“Well, we should at least find out who led the pixies to William. It means we have a traitor here and we have to get him out,” I growled.
Randy finally surrendered. “Okay, where do we start?”
I looked at Freya and frowned deeply at her misery. “The wolf that led them away, did they say who it was? Did you see who did it?”
She rubbed her eyes, thinking back to the hard moment. “I—I think they said his name was—was Ezequiel.”
My empty stomach fell and I looked to Randy in horror. The kind wolf that helped me after I rescued his sister, he was the one who did this? How could he? Why would he? What drove him to—
“LUNA!” Justin’s voice roared over the pack lands.
I looked at Randy and we both froze for a moment. We had more trouble than just finding the traitor now.
