Helen POV
I obeyed my mate for a week while my bones realigned and healed. He was surprised I had done so well after taking his super poison every morning, but I never really did take it.
At last, I convinced him to let me see Martha, so I ran over to her little hut, only to burst through the door and find Oscar in the living room, his face fallen in his hands. I took the seat next to him, his eyes lifted and bloodshot.
“What’s wrong?”
He paused for a long, heavy moment. “She’s gone, Luna. She left.”
“What? Why did she leave?”
He bit his lip and spoke in a raw, rough voice. “That mate of yours said she was crazy, but we both saw it, Luna! It was unbelievable but it happened!”
“What happened? Justin wouldn’t tell me much.”
“We just saw some kind of man with Ezequiel when he was taken from the house.”
“Wait, he was taken?”
“Yes, of course he was. He loved True Mates, he would never want to her this pack. I promise.”
“Where did this man take him?”
“I don’t know, Luna,” he look pitiful and exhausted, and smelled terrible as well. “But he had his arms behind his back like he couldn’t move, but there were no restraints on his wrist. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing either, but it happened. He wouldn’t listen to me, though.”
I sat back, feeling a trail of shock pour over me. If he was right, then that means the wizard Juden once possessed is really alive. I suppose it’s possible for him to make a fake scene of his death, I never got that close to him to study his features.
I also wouldn’t put anything past the last Alpha King.
“Did she say where she was going, Oscar? I have to go after her. She’s not safe… maybe none of us are.”
“You can’t just go after her, Luna. She said she was going after the guy that did it.”
“How would she know where the wizard is?”
His brow furrowed. “Isn’t that William’s guy?”
“What?” I gasped in horror. “No, it’s not. He was with Juden, I know he was because he did the same thing to me he did to her brother. It’s not William or the Huntsman! Why? Is she going after the Huntsman?!”
He hung his head heavily. “Oh no…”
I sprung out of my seat and ran so fast I thought Joy would explode out of my frame just to take over. I couldn’t let Martha get hurt, which meant if she went after the Huntsman, it might already be too late for her.
I know his savageness first hand. It’s not worth the battle of trying to prove her brother’s innocents. Besides, I know that the wizard Juden used on me did the same thing to her brother, which means my story can finally be corroborated.
But if that’s true, then why hasn’t Justin mentioned it all week?
I skid to an abrupt halt at the edge of the pack lands, the warriors turning to block my way, their heads hunkered down in respectful obedience, but still, they wouldn’t let me pass. I hiccupped in shock, feeling a warm hand brush up my spine.
“Where are you going, Mate?”
I shook my head, feeling already defeated in my mission, which seemed sad considering he’s my mate, I should feel like he’s on my side of things, but he’s still hesitant.
He doesn’t trust me even when other people can back up my story.
“Martha left the pack,” I huffed, turning on my heels to face Justin. He was already pressed against my chest when I looked up to his handsome, sculpted face. “She needs me.”
“This whole pack needs you and that means you stay here. Understood?”
I opened my mouth ready to argue but he slipped his arms around my hips, throwing my stomach onto his shoulder and I was whisked back toward out home. I clawed at his back lightly, needing to push off of him, furious and annoyed by his antics.
“Told you I’d do whatever I need to just so I can assure you’re safe.”
“Whatever,” I snapped. “Just let me down! I can walk!”
He must have rolled his eyes because he finally exhaled exasperatingly and set me down. As soon as my feet hit the dirt, I felt Joy rip out of me in an instant. My bones shuttered and snapped into place, mid-run, and charged for the border.
“Stop the Luna!”
Even with Justin’s warning, I leapt over the warriors on the edge of the pack. I could hear them behind me, running, but eventually the sound phased out and I was deep into the dangerous, unkind woods. I kept my wolfen form, just to be safe, all while a Lycan roar came out from behind me.
Justin was getting closer, his speed and sense of smell outdoing mine, but if I found the Huntsman first, I could show him Martha is in trouble and that we have to protect her.
She may just be a human, but I was treated lower than that status by my parents and first mate. I just want to be the compassionate Luna I never had. It would make this pack ever stronger.
My mate’s Lycan sliced through the air with his body and landed nearly on my back. I held back a scream of shock, pouncing out of the way as he his form was vicious and full of fury yet again.
I could shift back now, but his Lycan still hadn’t accepted me as trustworthy again. I couldn’t guarantee that he wouldn’t hurt me. Justin would try his best but after I just ran from him, he could have felt differently now.
To my surprise, he shifted mortal first, as an act of surrender he wanted me to reciprocate.
I couldn’t let that happen. I couldn’t give up and walk home, I was already consumed with finding and saving Martha, in honor of her brother. I had to go get her and if possible, kill William and the Huntsman once and for all.
But there was still the trouble of my overprotective mate.
He still treated me like a Tiger-Lily, a weak tri-color without a chance of ever fighting back. It seemed impossible, but I also ached me to think I couldn’t just ask him to go with me.
To help.
So, I did the only thing I knew how to best when faced with utter trouble and scold. I ran.
