Helen POV
The library is disheveled in the estate. We managed to sneak down various halls while the guards are busy at the medical office where Juden is still healing from the attack he raged on his son.
It must have been an ugly fight, too; Justin is convinced when his dad reawakes, he will be set into chains, maybe even whipped, as to tame the Lycan inside.
He was worried about the marks on my back but after some panting kisses and few lingering touches, the marks closed on their own. I was powerful, more powerful than I ever felt as a Tiger Lily, but more powerful than a Snow White.
My coat was everchanging and Justin knew it was turning me into something stronger, but I don’t know if he realized how strong I had become. His wounds hurt in the moment, but the pain didn’t last. My fear would be palpable by now, loitering through the library, but I feel invigorated.
I feel relentless.
“What happened in here?” I took lengthy steps over the piles of books in the library, the shelves thrown all over the place, holes pressed into the walls, and pages ripped asunder on the floor. “Who would do this, Justin?”
“I don’t think that’s the problem, mate,” he huffed, helping me over a pile of books with claw marks thrashed throughout their covers. “We should worry about what they were looking for.”
I glanced to the back corner, recalling the shelf that held the Lycan books and others like it, now torn up into splinters and left in a pile of papers.
“Oh no,” I said, helplessness swelling in my stomach.
Justin reached for my hand, wanting to comfort me, but the feeling of doom had already set in.
“It’s all ripped, all of it!” I pressed my hands to my burning hot cheeks. “They got here first and destroyed everything, Justin. We will never find it in here. Never.”
“No, Helen, don’t go giving up just yet,” he said, kicking a pile of books away with his foot. Underneath a pile of shredded book papers sat a pretty, gold key, swirly and ornate at he tip. “We might not be in the right room after all.”
“Where does that key go?”
“To my mother’s room,” he said. “Her room has been locked up since she died. This doesn’t make sense. Whoever was in here had this key and dropped in when shifting,” he growled. “They’re looking for what we have. I know they are.”
“We should leave,” I begged, finding my mate in the dark and clinging to his side. “They’re angry. That is clear. We shouldn’t be here in case they come back for that key.”
Justin nodded, aiming to lead us out of here, but stopped short of the door. He pressed my back into the wall, his lips near my temple as he leaned into the doorway but hesitated. He held a finger over my lips, edging for me to be silent.
“How could she be this wretched?”
“I don’t know, but she is going to regret it,” a familiar tone said, somewhere in the hallway. “I shouldn’t have let her enter those games, just to lose. That Lycan has gotten to her wolf. There’s no way she would have beat Diana!”
Justin shot me a sad look, the deceitful voices in the hallway belonging to my parents.
“Such a filthy mutt. I should go talk to her and set her right. She’s going to pay for hurting our girl,” my mother bit. It was obvious they were mad at my outcome in the games, harming Diana; their favorite and only socially recognized daughter. “Where is their room? I’m going to give her a piece of my mind!”
“Easy, now,” my father bit, I hope in anticipation to tell his wife, my spiteful mother, that it’s okay. That I had to do it to win the game or Diana would have killed me. He does no such thing. “We will find her and give her more than a worthy punishment.”
Justin shot out into the hallway and the voices stopped. I had to throw myself in his way to keep him from pouncing, my parent’s horrified gasps ringing out down the hall. I put myself between them, stepping forward to my father.
His eyes darted away, my mother flinging a slap through the air that connected with my cheek and temple. I didn’t stumble, only held my breath as she reared back for another hit. Justin’s fist hit her first, though, forcing her to fly down the hallway in response.
I held my breath until she hit the ground, my father racing after her in response.
“You will not strike my mate ever again,” Justin snarled. “How dare you?”
“You monster! You broke her jaw!” My father snarled.
“She slapped the future Luna of Lone Wolf pack; she deserved that mark for striking my mate!”
I stood still for a long moment. Of course, Justin is the Alpha of his pack still and that means, as his fated, I would be his Luna. I hadn’t let that information sink into my veins for a long minute. I forgotten that outside of the games, outside of the estate, my mate was more powerful than just his Lycan.
He was an Alpha. He could start a war with my father and be justified with it.
Justin would win, too.
“You haven’t even marked her as your mate,” my mother snapped, sitting up as she held a hand over her bruises, bleeding cheek. “You’re just filling your time with taking her virginity before you chew her up and spit her out! She is worthless and hideous and—”
But she stopped, eyeing me carefully.
The thing is, no matter how she called me ugly, I wasn’t. My hair had a new, clean bounce and my eyes were brighter, my skin clear and perfectly polished in complexion. I was beautiful, more beautiful than they had ever seen me.
“She’s a whore,” my mother said, grasping for any insult she could find.
Justin pressed my back into the wall, signaling for me to stay put as I could his attention turn. He handed me to key, kissed my forehead, and faced my parents down the hall with a new look in his eyes; one I knew would bring trouble.
“She is my mate,” Justin sneered, “She is my only mate, forever. She will be the Luna; she will overpower her sister and her pathetic first mate—I will have them killed for their treatment of my mate! But not before I kill you,” he barked.
He was staring at my father and in all, my father looked at me, helpless in his eyes.
“I will let you pass on the Alpha title to your deceitful daughter and that horrible mate of hers, so when I come for their throats, Fiery Cross pack will be under the control of Alpha Justin of Lone Wolf. You will suffer the consequences of your actions even in death.”
Shivered in Justin’s words, nearly in his Lycan form as he begged to start that plan right here, in this hallway. Even with their painful words, I couldn’t watch my mate kill my parents. I stepped forward and pressed the key back into Justin’s palm.
“Leave them alone,” I said, dropping my head. “They came to see Diana, they’re only real daughter. Let them swoon over her. We have bigger problems to worry about, mate.”
Justin traded a look between me and my sulking, frighten parents on the ground. He soothed out the ripples of his anger and inhaled sharp, followed with a modest nod and kiss on my hot cheek.
“Anything for the future Luna,” he said.
Looking into his eyes, I was lost in his power, in his rage, but also in his words.
A Tiger Lily wolf to a Lycan’s Luna.
Everything impossible to the world was becoming possible.
