Helen POV
My heart shot up into my throat at the sight of my first mate. His eyes were hollowed in bruises, his lips clashed in a cut and he was favoring his left leg, limping on the other as he shut the door behind him and locked it accordingly. Only now do I notice the claw scratches on the inside of the door.
Something tells me this room was built for fortitude, not for an easy break in.
“What are you doing here?” I swallowed.
Scott looked down at me in his battered state. I could have only hoped Justin killed him before in the courtyard. Now I’m not so sure this snake will die unless it’s head is cut off.
I wince at such a morbid thought.
“You’re mate has caused a lot of damage to this pack, to other packs, and I think it’s time he sees that just because he is a Lycan Devil, doesn’t mean he is invincible,” Scott sneered.
“What are you planning to do, Scott? You will not hurt my mate!”
“No, I’m not,” he growled. “At least, not directly. It’s clear that whatever strength he has found in this bond, has given you the same strength. You’ve been changing, Helen, in more ways than one.”
His eyes drifted down my shivering body, as if picturing me without my clothes on; vulnerable and naked and useless in his eyes.
“Whatever you’re planning,” I growled, “I would rethink it. You’re only going to cause problems, Scott. Justin is still the son of the Alpha King. He is an Alpha. He is powerful.”
Scott rolled his lips over his teeth, snickering a tongue click at the sight of me on my knees before him. I wanted to stand but I couldn’t risk the backlash it would cause. Scott has to think he is in power. It’s the only way I’ll get out of here alive and unharmed.
“According to that little paper in your pants,” Scott said, knowingly glancing down to the waist of my clothes, “he is at his full power when he marked you. I guess that means we have to prevent him from using that power, Helen.”
I shuddered at his spite when saying my name. He spit it from his lips like acid on his tongue.
Why does it wound me still when I don’t care for him anymore; not even the slightest?
“The Alpha King and I have had a lot of talks throughout the last few days,” he purred. “Knowing this now, the news that Justin’s power is at its prime, it pushes our truce to a new level.”
“What are you saying, Scott? You have nothing to do with Justin’s power.”
“Don’t I?!” he screamed, my body going cold at his ferocity. “I will be the Alpha of Fiery Cross pack! I will be responsible for diplomacy and peace and war—If your Lycan mate is known to beat me down without repercussions, I’ll be a weak target to every other pack out there!”
I swallowed the budding lump in my throat. “You’re weakness is your own doing, not Justin’s.”
He charged forward, cocking his leg back to swipe at me with a harsh kick. He landed the first one into my ribs but I caught the other, punching my fist into his opposite knee and sending him to the floor in an ungodly cry.
“Why you little—”
He pounced forward, hands on my throat and pressing into my windpipes. I choked on the air suffering in my lungs, his thumbs daring to grow claws, poking holes in my neck to watch me bleed.
He spoke through gritted teeth and a beet-red complexion, “I will not allow him to grow stronger. I will never let you surpass my mate—you are nothing, Helen. You were a mistake from the start and I’m going to wound your mate through your suffering!”
I looked to the door, begging for Justin to break through and help me, but it was clear by the fighting outside that wouldn’t happen. I’m stuck here now; I have to face Scott alone.
Bringing the last ounce of strength in my body, I curled a fist and slammed it into his cheek, already black and purple with a mark made by my mate. I repeated the action, Scott releasing my throat at last and causing me to gasp in response.
“You better not kill her,” a new voice growled in the doorway.
I could only see a hazy sight of Alpha King Juden in the hall, teeth bore in threat to Scott who thankfully climbed off of me, holding his cheek that bled in response to my hits. I could finally stand, watching the Alpha King assess the scuffle he walked in on and mostly likely perpetrated.
“I will not let my son grow stronger than me,” Juden hissed, “but I can’t deny him his mate on the full moon. Justin’s rage and needs were a destruction to my pack, of the mortal’s world, and that leaves me in a very dangerous middle-ground.”
I shook from head to toe, his words lashing hard at me. “You can’t kill me,” I realized, “but you will use me?”
For a moment, I thought about how that would work. It doesn’t.
“I am his Luna as his fated mate,” I growled, staring at Juden and Scott both as they stood side by side, pride dripping from their smug, bruised faces. “You can’t stop him from being more powerful than you both.”
“We will see about that,” Juden gusts.
They both charge forward and while Scott pressed my hands behind me, kicking me to my knees, Juden brough out a silver cuff I anticipated would be lined around my wrists. He instead forced it around the base of my neck and clipped it shut behind the cape of my hair.
I gasped as I fell forward, Scott pressing a boot into my shoulder to keep me down while I fought the collar now secured around my throat.
“I wouldn’t toy with that,” Juden snickered. “The minute you try to rip it off, it will secrete a dose of wolfsbane through a needle set to shoot into your throat if the collar is disturbed.”
I looked up in horror. “What—why would you—”
“My son may be powerful, but he will never be Alpha King,” Juden snarled. “I’ll make sure to deter him from ever trying to take my title, too.”
I looked at the floor in shock, in horror at the thought of their appalling plan.
“What do we do now?” Scott asked.
The Alpha King laughed. “We let her scurry off to her mate. We have a few weeks until the Full moon returns. We will strike then, at his weakest.”
I tugged on the collar thoughtlessly, feeling helpless at their plans. “Whatever you have planned will fail! You both want to cut Justin down but it’s clear you both couldn’t kill him if you tried!”
Juden laughed at my words. “I don’t want him dead; he is my son. I want him expelled, outcasted, and seen as the monster he truly is. I’ll make sure everyone in the world fears him to the point of no return, so I will always be the most powerful Alpha alive.”
I sulked at his cunning plan. “When I tell him about this, he will—” I blacked out suddenly, a harsh kick to my cheek sending me to the obliterated darkness in the depths of my mind.
