Helen POV
I shouldn’t have been surprised to see warriors charging through the suite. It had been hours since my mate ran off into the mortal world, destroying everything in his way while experiencing a rage over my near-death.
They dragged me from the bedroom, ruthlessly throwing me into a cage in the back of a van waiting downstairs. It was Lone Wolf pack, I could tell by their attire, and the sight of them wasn’t even alarming.
Justin must have tipped off our location without a chance of us hiding out anymore. I looked through the kennel, feeling like a rabid and stray rogue, seeing familiar chains looped on the floor that must have been waiting for Justin’s capture.
One of the warriors walked up and kicked the side of my cage, speaking through a buff snarl. “Where is he?!”
My labored breath hadn’t got much better after being poisoned and bit twice by a vampire. “I don’t know—he jumped out the window—and I couldn’t stop him.”
“Tell me what you know, mutt!” He kicked the cage again, nailing my fingers that gripped the thin bars.
I hissed a breath and fall backwards, cowering in the furthest corner of the kennel.
[Joy, are you there?]
I couldn’t even feel my wolf anymore. I feared she had suffered from the wolfsbane already and succumb to the poison. I wept for her, for me, and mostly for Justin.
“I hope he finds you first,” I breathed in rebuttal. “His Lycan will kill you!”
He picked up the cage and slammed it against the far wall, tossing me around while I was trapped in the small space. My head hit on the inside metal wall of the van, another warrior tossing the engine into gear and speeding us off.
I played dead or unconscious, blood dribbling from my neck wounds and from the new ones on my face from the warrior’s abrasiveness.
My fingers instinctively went to my throat for comfort, grabbing at my rings on the necklace that was no longer on my throat. I gasped, checking the flaps of the jacket that sat torn over my bare body, but the necklace was gone.
I wanted to cry but it wouldn’t help anything. I don’t even think I had any more tears to shed.
“Look, over there,” one of the warriors groaned, pointing out the front window.
I craned my neck enough to see Justin’s Lycan in the middle of the road, staring down the windshield of the van that sped toward him.
“Stop, we have to take them back to Juden. He didn’t say to kill him!”
The warriors muttered an argument but it was too late. The van stopped so abruptly that my cage flew forward, slamming onto the interior wall, while the two warriors in the front seat flew through the windshield instead.
I could only hear the chaos of their deaths at the claws of my Lycan mate. He wasn’t happy to see them either.
“Justin!” I called out, fighting the kennel that I should have been able to tear out of easily. It was impossible, though, not without Joy backing me. “Justin! In here!”
His Lycan ripped the back door off of the crumbled van, his dark fur and predator eyes sharp on my throat. He walked forward, standing so tall over me that he had to duck into the back of the van.
He looked to the chains on the floor next to me, recognizing them as I had.
His exterior broke at the sight of them and he fell to his knees, tired and groaning as he caught his breath. Even in his mortal form, he ripped the side of the cage off and freed me. I could only crawl over to his aid, leaning into him for comfort.
“We have to leave,” I said, snuggled into his side. “Juden probably sent more than two warriors after us.”
He shook his head, downtrodden in tone as he replied, “maybe we should go back.”
“What? No, Justin. What are you saying?”
“I can’t protect us out here as well as I thought,” Justin breathed. “The vampire tried to mark you, tried to take you from me. And then the collar went off. It actually had poison inside. I can’t believe that, Helen. I should have found a way to save you.
“Instead, I let that bloodsucker think about taking you from me.”
“It was one, stupid vampire, Justin. We don’t have to return to Lone Wolf because of him. We can keep moving further, keep trying to make a life for ourselves. Your father and Scott will only hurt us worse.”
He didn’t seem convinced but still brought his lips to mine.
“It doesn’t feel right as an Alpha to run from his pack,” he said in a husky tone. “But if it means keeping you safe from the Alpha King, and finding out more about our destiny together, then I’ll do as you wish. Let’s get out of here.”
He carried me from the mangled van and past the onlookers on the street who stopped to witness what had happened here tonight. He managed to grab a set of keys from a mortal nearby, snagging his sports car and pressing me into the passenger seat.
The mortal begged for his car but one look at Justin’s exposed teeth had changed his tone.
We sped off down the Las Vegas strip. Hunger, thirst, fear and regret had hit me all at once. Maybe it was right though. I should punish myself.
Justin wants to know about the diary page still, wondering what it means for our destiny that he mentioned in the van, and I haven’t told him he is too powerful now, even as a Lycan.
We’re being hunted because my mate, my beautiful and caring Lycan, is the most dangerous beast in the entire world. Even more dangerous and powerful than the Alpha king himself.
Juden won’t allow his son to take his title as Alpha King.
And if I can help it, I won’t let him take that title either. It’s been on my mind for days but I can’t tell him any of this information. If he defeats Juden and we’re the Alpha King and Luna Queen, we will only face more problems together.
I can’t possibly face more trouble, let alone if Scott and my sister are Alpha and Luna of Fiery Cross pack. It’s selfish, but I don’t want to return to our old lives in the packs.
I don’t want to be that pathetic Tiger Lily everyone cheers against in a fight.
I would rather be a rogue Snow White with her dangerous Lycan mate.
