Justin POV
I’m thankful Randy had a makeshift shower set up with a pipe and the cave springs set up, but I don’t think he’s very pleased with having to share this confined space with my rambunctious mate and myself.
He brough enough clean clothes, though, so I slipped into some pants and helped my mate into a tee shirt meant for me, her frame healed all over and his eyes pressed hard together while she slept. I had exhausted her earlier, and for good reason.
Randy offered me a bottle of something, alcohol probably but it was about the taste for me, and we sat at the table where he had a hard time looking me in the eyes.
“Sorry about that,” I breathed, sipping the drink with amusement. “I really didn’t want to do that with you present but—” My voice fell with his look. He understood why it happened.
“She’s healed now, and she knows better than to do anything stupid to be your martyr,” Randy said, tipping his eyes toward my slumbering Helen. “I recognize why you had to do it. I didn’t enjoy being in such proximity to it—twice—but we might be in here awhile. Might as well get used to it.”
I looked around the comfy space, liking how well hidden it is. My father wouldn’t be smart enough to find us here. Neither would that asshole Scott.
“We can’t stay here forever. We need an exit plan,” I said.
My mate stirred but stayed asleep thankfully. She can’t live in here. It will drive her crazy feeling like a jailed captive in these rock walls.
“I got us this far,” Randy groaned. “I don’t know what to do from here. Your father is going to get that little she wolf killed. He came close with those marks. When I picked her up, she had already lost a lot of blood. It’s a good thing you can heal each other like that.”
“No kidding,” I spoke, leaning forward. “It’s certainly helpful.”
When we had finished our vicious sex, she collapsed in exhaustion, her back fully healed and her fractured bones mended. The marks I made during that invigorating fuck had healed by then, as well.
“What is the next move, then? We can’t get close to Lone Wolf,” Randy said.
“Or Fiery Cross.” I thought of her horrible parents and that greedy ex-mate she had prowling around her now. “That future Alpha is edging into my nerves, claiming they are mates again. How does he have the gall when he married her sister?”
I heard my father telling me that my little mate had been given back to Scott to be reunited as mates, conveniently after her coat went pure but I don’t understand how that would work. With his mating bond to Diana, he had no way of forming a connection with Helen again.
“She’s dead,” Randy said simply. “Found dead conveniently the night you two ran off to Las Vegas.”
My Lycan rattled in surprise. “So two dead bodies pinned on my mate’s fault, am I correct?”
“Yeah, they blamed Helen. Said it was existing wounds from the wolfen games but she was already healing from those marks. The Alpha King’s hospital is a dangerous place, for sure. Donna was healing before she was found in the woods, slaughtered.”
“My father has always been cruel to me, I just blamed my Lycan for that treatment. But this,” I groaned, seeing my mate whimper in the poor taste of her nightmares, “this isn’t normal. This is savage and she doesn’t deserve it at all.”
“It’s just how he does things. We accepted our fathers’ behaviors because we thought we would gain the pack and change it all one day. It was a lie, Justin. We’re not getting a pack.”
I perked up at his words. Staring at my strong Beta, I thought of us together. We’re strategic and wise and we have narrowly escaped incident, but it is escape enough to know that we are powerful.
“We don’t need Lone Wolf Pack,” I said, my eyes bright at the possibilities before us now. “We just need wolves who hate my father, who despise hers,” I added, pointing to my frail mate. “We can form our own pack. A coalition against the others.”
“How would we even begin to do that, Justin?”
“The wolfen games. They saw me and my mate defeat the other wolves out there, one of them being Scott’s future Luna. They will see how powerful we are and they will beg to join our pack.”
“They fear your Lycan and now,” Randy added, watching Helen breath heavy in the panic of her dreams, “they think your mate murdered two other she wolves.”
“My father ran his pack on fear and power. We will prove she was innocent by his past crimes and manipulations,” I said, sure of my words but also uneasy of that feat.
Randy nodded, seemingly accepting this idea with minimal pushback.
“I guess it won’t hurt to try,” he exhaled at last. “It’s going to be difficult, but we’ve faced a lot of trouble already. Might as well push onward.”
“Exactly,” I breathed, feeling the weight on my Lycan relieved at last.
“No, Scott,” Helen whimpered, tossing aimlessly in her slumber. “Ah, no, don’t—”
My heart sank with her fear, with her sadness. We are stronger together, I remind myself. So much stronger than either of us thinks we are.
“I’m going to go lay with my mate,” I said, looking to see there was only a couch and a flimsy cot left for my beta who arraigned this hideout. “You okay to sleep over there?”
Randy’s brow furrowed before he scoffed a fake laugh. “You think I’m going anywhere near that bed? I’m burning that fucking thing when we get out of this cave after what you two did to it.”
I would apologize but I was done being sorry. I loved my mate. I loved fucking her, too.
For now, I slipped into bed beside her, running my hands through her perfectly tamed hair and over her tired, petite body. She was not only stronger now, but more beautiful. I thought she was perfect before, as perfect as could be, but seeing her changes have only exemplified that claim.
I kissed her tenderly, a little on the edge of waking her up with my cock in her hands, but I knew I had to let her sleep. We had lost a week and a half together and it felt like years. I wanted her constantly, so constant that it was unhealthy.
So constant that I wouldn’t survive without her at my side.
She dug herself into my arms and settled at that point, mumbling through her dreams as the topics of them lightened up. I didn’t want to know what Scott did to her while we were away from one another.
It didn’t matter. I’d kill him for it later. She would appreciate it too, no matter how much it would probably hurt to watch her second mate kill her first. I wasn’t sure of the repercussions because as long as she is safe and happy, then it’s all that mattered.
I stroked her necklace, proud that I got it back around her pretty little neck at last.
