                    Justin POV
Gwen, our pack healer, left the house at sunrise. I could have personally healed Helen but I was too afraid of shifting, of letting my Lycan get close enough to shift while exploring her beautifully sweet body.
I waved to the healer and retreated upstairs, seeing my mate still sniffling into her pillow. Her scars were still bright and fresh, and I could have the marks gone completely if I had my way with her, but this would be the best Helen could have for now.
I’m still too far on edge to have her body meet mine in sex.
Randy watched me carefully as I kissed her cheek. Her scent was so strong, too strong, that it burned my lungs and set a new fire ablaze in my blood.
“Careful,” Randy warned.
I gave him a pleading look. “She’s my mate. I am always careful with her.”
He shrugged, throwing his hands up in surrender. “Fine. I’ll go downstairs then.”
I waited for him to leave before slipping in bed beside my whimpering, distraught mate. I knew Randy had told her the truth about what happens if my Lycan mates her.
She didn’t seem too upset at first. That changed when Randy added a pinch of reality to it.
“I don’t—want them—to get—hurt—” She wept horribly, unable to breathe right as she pleaded through her many, many tears. “Justin—we can’t ever—we won’t ever—”
“Shh, we will, Helen,” I groaned, kissing the back of her head and toying with her long curls. “Just breathe, please, mate. I know it’s upsetting.”
I thought of my upbringing. Juden chained me into my room and sent in virgin after virgin trying to sate my ferocity. He whipped me, beat me, and tormented me every full moon until I found Helen.
I would never do that to my pups but if their Lycans, I don’t know how else to tame them.
My mate was running over the same thoughts, fearful of everything we had been through just because of my beast.
“What if we mate normally?” She looked at me with wide, red and wet eyes. She added, “will we be able to just have normal wolfen pups?”
I shook my head in dismissal.
She barked out her sobs even harder.
“I’m sorry,” I said, speaking into her scalp. “I want nothing more to give you regular pups, Helen. We would have been great parents one day, I know that. I’m sorry—it’s my fault.”
She furrowed and frowned. “What? No, it’s not you, Justin. I don’t care if they are Lycans. I care that they will face the same problems we have. My father wants you dead, Juden wants you outcasted and weakened just because you’re stronger than him as a Lycan.”
“You don’t want them to be persecuted,” I realized.
That only meant one thing.
I would have to illuminate the threats now, before we would be able to bring more little beasts into this cruel world. I set that aside, though, wanting to be present for my downtrodden mate.
“Come on, Helen, relax. We don’t have to deal with this all right now. We can just enjoy each other as mates. Come here, please,” I begged.
She gave in at last, crying harder as she clung to my chest. I kept her there, never wanting to release her again.
Randy poked his head into the bedroom a few moments later. “We have a visitor.”
My brow perked. “Who is it?”
“He says you know him,” he shrugged.
I stood from bed and despite my efforts, my mate does the same. She wipes her cheeks and follows us down the stairs, wearing a simple bra and some shorts. I would suggest she wore a shirt but her wounded back needs the fresh air.
I helped her down the last few steps, seeing her aching and sore with every movement. Randy opened the door and my Lycan instantly went into fury. I subdued him, shoving Helen into Randy’s caging arms.
He held her there for protection, reading my body language as I assessed the traitor before me.
“Fae Russo,” Helen gasped.
“The winged coward,” I growled, seeing his once luminesce wings crippled and wounded. “You better have a good reason being here.”
He dropped to his knees, panting for air as he bowed, trying to seem as submissive as possible. It was a good effort, but my claws still shifted into long, sharp nails that begged to pluck his eyes from his head.
“I have to ask for mercy,” he gusted. “And—for help.”
“Never,” I snapped. “Get off my pack lands, bug. I won’t hesitate to squish you.”
Fae Russo shuddered. “I know you don’t trust me, but I have something to say, please just—”
“Throw him in the barracks,” I barked.
Randy coheres Helen to sit on the steps that led upstairs, taking Russo down the ones that led to our own personal jail in the basement. I found my mate’s lips and kissed them deeply.
Her knees tipped apart in reflex.
“Really? Right now?” I hummed. “We have an enemy to deal with, mate. After that then maybe we settle your desire upstairs, okay?”
She nodded, hopeful but still stricken with fear. “Why do you think he is here, Justin?”
I waved her concerns away. “Don’t worry about it, please. It’s not important, whatever it is. He is probably here for us to do something for him or working for my father again to set us up. Whatever it is, don’t strain yourself over it. I’ll keep you safe.”
She settled with my words.
Randy came upstairs, his eyes wide in horror.
“What’s wrong?” Helen cooed.
“Well, he has a lot to say,” Randy grumbled. “He spewed a bunch of it at me to try and convince me to not lock him up.”
“It’s probably not true,” I gusted.
My senses spiked, seeing Russo coming up the stairs hesitantly.
Randy forced a compliant grin. “You should probably hear this, Alpha. It’s bad.”
I charged past my Beta, shoving the Fae down the rest of the steps and pinching his wings to lead him into a cell. He gusted in shock, not trying to fight me but definitely trying to slow my intentions.
“Please,” he grunted, clinging to the cell bars. “It’s bad, Lycan. I need you to hear me out, please!”
I turned, ignoring him, seeing Helen perched on the stairs, peeking through the railing as she watched the Fae call out helplessly for me to listen to him.
“Juden took my wizards!”
I stopped cold in my once determined tracks.
Helen slapped a hand over her mouth to cover a gasp.
Turning to face the traitor, I eyed him carefully. “What the fuck did you just say, Russo?”
He bowed his head, collapsed onto his knees in utter exasperation. “The wizards… they’re all gone, Lycan. It was shortly after the attack where they made us turn against you and your mate—” He looked to Helen, tears in his eyes.
I kicked the bars and he fell back away from them in response.
“Don’t act like you were forced,” I hissed. “You betrayed us! You made my mate endure so much pain! He whipped her near death afterwards; do you know that? Look at her and think about that next time you act remorseful!”
He shook his head, mouth agape as he watched my mate weeping on the steps nearby. “I’m sorry, to both of you. I didn’t want anyone to get hurt but they threatened my clan, I had to do it.”
“Now you have no clan left,” I bit. “Good! I hope they suffer like my mate had!”
Helen whimpered, escaping upstairs with my venomous words.
I knew through her pain she was thinking of Olu and Penelope, the father and daughter that took us in. She was so adorned with that little girl that hearing that all of his wizards were taken by Juden wounded her.
“Please, Lycan. I would never expect mercy. But I need your help.”
Thinking of Helen, I shook my head. “You will have to ask mercy from her. Not me.”
