                    Justin POV
Randy wasn’t ready for us to descend, but it’s not up to my Beta.
It’s up to me.
I hung back at the edge of the pack lands, my mate fallen in a heap of exasperation and blood. She looked so close to death I could smell it in the wind as it blew by.
“We need to wait,” Randy groaned. “The full moon isn’t safe for you, not yet.”
“Do you see my mate, the pack Luna, over there bleeding to death, or is it just me?”
Randy lets his head fall. “I know, I know. If don’t get her the first time, I am worried they will kill her. We need to be precise, Alpha. I’m just trying to help you achieve that.”
“We get her tonight,” I readmit. “Tell the warriors to surround the pack. We strike in an hour when everyone is in position.”
Randy nodded and left my side. I didn’t want to be alone with Russo but it didn’t seem like I had much of a choice. Russo is kneeling beside me, his eyes anxiously pacing my mate, so battered and in pain.
I just want to take all of those pains away, forever.
“She’s special to you, isn’t she?” Russo hummed.
I leaned forward, wishing I was by her side down there, taking the beatings I know she has had to endure. “Of course. She is my forever fated mate. She’s half of my soul. Without her, my Lycan would probably perish.
“I don’t get a second chance. She’s my everything.”
“She is a strong little wolf,” Russo nodded. “Don’t worry, I’ll help anyway I can. She’s going to be fine when this is all over and we can all pretend it never happened.”
I shook my head, still frustrated by his betrayal but it’s not worth fighting over. Not right now.
“I just hope she doesn’t hate me for having to leave her behind,” I groaned. It’s all I’ve been thinking about since she freed the wizards. “I just want her back, Fae. She’s my heart.”
He rested a heavy hand on my shoulder. “Don’t worry. I think it’ll all work out.”
Randy came sprinting back, out of breath with a wild look in his eyes. “We have to go now,” he barked, shaking his head. “And I don’t mean go rescue her. Lone Wolf pack has warriors outside the property. Heading back in. They will find our scent and attack from the outside.”
“We will be surrounded,” Russo said.
“Then we go,” I breathed, looking down to my mate. “We get her now.”
“No,” Randy pleaded.
It was too late.
I shifted, running down into the village below toward Helen, my wolves following suit after my lead. Randy came to my side while Russo hung back. He’s not very useful in a physical fight.
There were still some warriors in the pack grounds who came out to clash with our frontline. My Lycan felt no fear, tearing through their flesh as they would come for me.
For the amount of warriors there were compared to mine, they didn’t seem like they were trying to stop me very hard. They all went for my warriors, teaming up against them in biting matches, while Randy and I were practically left alone.
I made it to my mate instantly. She hardly could hold her head up, letting me fall before her, shifting into my mortal form, while I tried to brush back her long, bloody hair.
“Please, Helen,” I begged. I pulled her chin up, seeing the deep bruising on her face and the horrid welts that have lined her body. “Oh, moon goddess. Mate, I’m going to save you.”
She groaned a noise, shaking her head while I tried to wipe the blood off her eyes. Maybe she just can’t see me, but when our eyes meet—
Something is wrong.
Something is different.
She had a white fog lingering over her irises and she looked through me like I was not even there.
“Helen,” I breathed. “What’s going on?”
There’s a loud, cackling laugh. I pull her face into my shoulder, showing her that I will protect her from my father as he stalks out of the estate and stands just behind my mate’s back.
“Hello, son,” Juden barked
The Alpha King was smiling wide while our packs clashed in the streets of his village. I stayed down with my mate, trying to gain her focus but I feared she was already somewhat dead inside.
“Father,” I snarled. “You should have just left us alone. I was never going to kill you, but now I don’t have much of a choice, do I?”
His smile grew, joined soon by that of her father’s, who pranced up to the Alpha King’s side like a lap dog. Together, the two of them looked like the most evil of pairs there ever could be.
“Looks like I have two rats to kill,” I growled.
Her father looked down on his daughter like she was a bug, like she was in his way, and so he stepped forward despite me showing my teeth, his hand brushing back the matted, bloody hair on her head.
“Helen, stand up,” he said coolly.
My mate stalled, trying to stand, her arms still pressed behind the past as she shifted her weigh onto her bruised, cut knees.
“You can stay down,” I purred. “I will carry you out of here, mate. Please, relax. You can’t—”
She finally stood, shivering all over as her body temperature had severely dropped in the glare of the full moon. I turned to see my pack at war, knowing we couldn’t hold out for long.
I have to get Helen out of here.
“She’s staying with me,” Juden said, stepping forward while he maneuvered something into her hands, still crossed behind the post but not tied together by chains or ropes. “She needs to return to her family, Justin. She belongs to her father and her step-mother.”
“What are you talking about?” I growled. “She is my mate! She is my Luna, and she always will be, father. I don’t know why you try to wound me with her suffering, but it will only cause your own demise.”
“Really now?” Juden teased.
For someone so typically afraid of me and my Lycan, he hardly seemed to flinch when I bore my teeth and whipped out my claws.
I wasn’t leaving with Helen. He had to have known that.
“She’s come around to my rule, son,” Juden said. “I’ve taken her in, promised to treat her like she deserves, if she would submit to me and her father. I think she has done so.”
“I think so too,” her dad chimed in.
I grabbed her face, trying to let he see my eyes, but she looked right through me.
“My darling mate, what are they talking about?”
“I’m talking about killing you, son,” Juden said, his voice carrying through his village. “Helen, daughter of the Alpha of Fiery Cross, mate of the Last Lycan, I COMMAND you to kill the last Devil, once and for all!”
I dared to laugh, seeing my mate move forward, bringing her hands from behind her back as she came to embrace me. I caught her with such relief, finally feeling her in my arms at last.
I looked at my father and chuckled. “I love you, mate. I’ll protect you.”
“I’m—sorry—Justin—”
She flinched, a sharp and overwhelming sensation breaking down my spine. I pushed her away, Randy’s wolf at my helm when I fell backwards, his teeth plucking a knife out of the back of my body.
He dropped the silver knife, covered in a poison-tainted blade.
Helen backed up to my father’s side, falling at his feet in utter and complete submission.
I’ve been betrayed by my one and only fated mate.
