Helen POV
I kept my head down, knowing Kesler had one thing on his mind when desperately wanting to make me suffer. He is an alpha male, a dark coated wolf who reminds me too much of Scott.
Now, above ever before, I wished that Kesler had the same fate of Scott.
Maybe this would be over quickly. Maybe it wouldn’t hurt as much as I think. Maybe, just maybe, I’ll black out and be granted unconscious to avoid feeling anything at all.
Kesler reels back his boot, brining it across my temple and throwing me into the side of the bathtub. Blood marks the floor already, but now there’s more. Crimson is such a terrible, painful color and it lines everything now.
“Fuck, that felt good,” he mumbled, inhaling like stepping out into fresh air. “Let’s get to the real fun, though, little Luna.”
He straddled my lap and I just tried to stay calm, knowing what is coming but not knowing how I would handle it. I laid back and shut my eyes, feeling him rustle around as he tried to get comfortable while I was everything but that.
“What are—”
Kesler fell sideways, my eyes shooting open to see Russo standing over the warrior, a long kitchen knife in his fist. He threw the knife aside while Kelser spit up blood, holding a wound on his shoulder from the slice.
Russo pulled me from the floor, lapping me over his arms while he ran out of the house, headed for the neutral territory. I watched the dim moon overhead, feeling it’s flagrant warmth so desperately trying to reach my body, I wept move over the moon than I did my wounds.
Why was the moon goddess doing this to me?
How did I deserve this?
“We’re leaving now—you can’t stay here any longer.”
I curled into Russo’s thick arms, watching his back as we sprinted through the woods, leaving my father’s pack behind. It was a great sigh to see, but one that hadn’t ended yet.
Kesler would most likely heal from his wounds quickly, which meant he could very well tell my father Justin is still alive.
The Last Lycan would have to fight again.
“Put me down,” I begged, my fist curled into the Fae’s chest. “You have to put me down, please, Russo.”
He gave me a puzzled look but at least his steps slowed. “No, Helen. What are you saying?”
“Kesler will tell my father what he heard. You have to take me back, I will take the fall for hurting him, but if we leave now, my father will hear about how Justin is still alive.”
My heart sunk with my words but they had to be said.
“I can’t let Justin get hurt again. Not after what happened at Lone Wolf pack.”
The Fae finally halted his steps altogether. He stared for a long moment around the woods where we were, just outside the line of my father’s pack boundaries. It’s hard to imagine any place as terrible as this, and why I would ever want to stay.
I’d do anything for my mate, even if it’s hard to digest that he wasn’t the one to come after me.
[He has his reasons] Joy assured me.
I nodded briefly, feeling a little wilted by that thought.
Russo shook his head, wanting to push forward, but he couldn’t.
“It’s okay,” I reaffirmed. “I’ll be okay. Just please, tell Justin I love him. And I’m sorry. It wasn’t my intent to ever hurt him.”
The Fae finally nodded, finding a tall, thick oak tree and laying me down against it’s roots. I curled up, cold and naked, my head spinning while I considered the torment I would return to with my parents. But I had to stop Kesler from spreading the truth of Justin.
Russo brushed my matted, blood soaked hair behind my ear.
“I will tell him you’re here. I can’t ensure that he will come after you. Helen, but I can promise that no matter what he chooses, I will try to get you out of here.”
I nodded, my eyes brimmed with hot tears. My stomach fell as he ran on, his wings glinting in the distance as the moon sat overhead.
After that, I crawled. I crawled until I couldn’t move anymore.
I collapsed in the town square, recalling the time I was here with Scott, having him berate me over the attack Justin, Randy and I executed in order to sway the pack members into our pack. Now, they all have their true Alpha; Justin.
And I’m here.
Kesler bolted out of the house, headed for my father’s pack house, probably to tell him the truth of what Russo had told me. It’s impossible to miss the look of glee that crosses his features.
“Well, little Luna is back after all.”
I collapsed on my side, blood pooling from my wounds in excess. “Please, Kesler, don’t tell them.”
He crossed his arms over his chest, staring down at me while he considered his options. Just then, my father bolted out of the house, circling my spot on the ground and looking to Kesler for answers.
I begged through my swollen, bruised eyed for him not to spill the truth.
“The Fae had his way with her and left,” Kesler mumbled. His lips pressed into a firm grin. “Guess he didn’t care to take her with him. She’s staying put, Alpha.”
My father rolled his eyes. “Of course. Can’t even pass her off to a damn Fae. Well, take her inside and put her in my basement. I’m sick of smelling her blood all over my pack grounds.”
Kesler nodded, watching my father stalk back inside. I craved the warmth, even of the chilly basement, but I knew it wouldn’t be that simple.
Turning into my side, Kesler yanked me off the ground and forced me to stand by a grasp in my hair. If I fell, it would rip my scalp off for sure. I managed to keep pace all the way into the house.
He threw me down the steps into the basement, my body landing in a final, hot heap.
It should have been so easy to escape with Russo, if not for Kesler’s interference. Now I’m trapped again, waiting for my Lycan mate to come to his senses and rescue me.
Something told me he wasn’t going to do such a thing.
Not after I was forced to stab him.
For now, I aim to heal myself, to heal Joy, so we can maneuver out of the hell by ourselves. We will get back to our Lycan mate and explain this entire ordeal away.
It will all work out… I hope.
