The next morning came too soon. The sun filtered through the thick curtains of my bedroom, casting soft golden rays across the floor. But no matter how peaceful the morning appeared, the unease from last night still sat heavily in my chest.
A sharp knock at my door pulled me from my thoughts.
"Jennie? You up?" Jisoo's voice was muffled through the door.
I sighed, running a hand through my hair before answering. "Yeah, come in."
Jisoo pushed the door open, already dressed in casual clothes, a knowing smirk on her lips. "You look like you barely slept."
I rolled my eyes. "Because I didn't. Something feels off."
She tilted her head. "Still? Even after the amusement park?"
"Especially after that," I admitted. "It's been too quiet. No threats. No new enemies. No surprises. It's unnatural."
Jisoo pursed her lips. "Maybe it's just a lucky break?"
I shook my head. "We don't get lucky breaks."
She sighed, stepping further inside. "Well, Irene's calling a meeting. She wants everyone in the lounge."
I frowned. "Did something happen?"
"Not sure, but Rosé looks concerned. You should come."
I nodded, pushing away the last of my morning drowsiness. Whatever it was, I needed to be ready.
By the time I entered the lounge, everyone was already gathered. Irene sat in her usual place, exuding authority, while Rosé stood beside her, arms crossed, looking troubled. Lisa and Seulgi were on the couch, their relaxed posture a stark contrast to the tension in the room.
I took a seat, eyes shifting between them. "What's going on?"
Irene's expression was unreadable as she slid a tablet toward me. "This."
I picked it up, scanning the screen. My stomach dropped.
A news article was displayed, bold headlines capturing my full attention:
Mysterious Deaths of Two Blackwood Members-Gang War Brewing?
Beneath the title were crime scene photos, taken in the dead of night. Blood. Bodies. The unmistakable mark of an execution.
"We didn't do this," I said immediately, looking up.
"I know," Irene replied. "Which means someone else did. And they're making sure it looks like us."
Lisa sat forward, brows furrowed. "But why? Blackwood already hates us. What's the point?"
Rosé exhaled slowly. "It could be someone trying to ignite a war. If Blackwood believes we attacked them, they'll retaliate."
Seulgi nodded. "And if they retaliate, we're forced to respond."
I clenched my jaw. This was bad. Very bad. If we didn't figure out who was behind this, we'd be dragged into a war we didn't start.
Irene's voice was calm, but firm. "We need to get ahead of this before Blackwood makes a move. I've already sent people to investigate, but we need to be careful."
Jisoo drummed her fingers against the table. "So what's the plan?"
I met Irene's gaze. "We find out who's setting us up. And we make them regret it."
Lisa smirked. "Now that's the Jennie I know."
But despite my confident words, a heavy feeling settled in my chest. Peace was never meant to last in our world.
And this was only the beginning.
