The tension in the air was thick as the aftermath of the night's mission settled. The team was exhausted, but the adrenaline still coursed through our veins. Jennie stood by the window of our safe house, her arms crossed tightly over her chest, lost in thought. The dim lighting cast soft shadows over her face, highlighting the sharp determination in her eyes, yet there was something else-something hidden beneath the surface.
I stepped closer, hesitating for a moment before I spoke. "You're doing that thing again."
Jennie glanced at me, raising an eyebrow. "What thing?"
"Shutting everyone out." I leaned against the wall, my arms mirroring hers. "You know, you don't have to carry everything alone."
She scoffed, shaking her head. "Easier said than done."
I sighed, stepping in front of her, my voice softer this time. "Look, I get it. You're used to being in control, always making the tough decisions. But you don't have to keep me at arm's length, Jennie. Not anymore."
She tensed slightly at my words but didn't move away. Her gaze met mine, and for a split second, I saw something flicker in her eyes-something vulnerable, something raw. But before I could grasp it, she turned away.
"I don't keep you at arm's length," she muttered.
I smirked, stepping closer, my fingers brushing against hers. "Then prove it."
Jennie stiffened at the contact, but she didn't pull away. Instead, she let out a slow breath before finally turning to face me fully. The air between us crackled with something intense, something neither of us could ignore any longer.
She stared at me, her expression unreadable. "Lisa..."
I took another step forward, closing the distance between us until there was barely any space left. My hand found hers, fingers intertwining. "I mean it, Jennie. I'm here. With you. For you."
For a moment, I thought she might push me away again. But then, something shifted. Jennie's walls cracked, just enough for her to let me in. And before I knew it, her lips crashed against mine.
The kiss was urgent, filled with emotions we had buried for far too long. My hands instinctively found her waist, pulling her closer as she tangled her fingers in my hair. Every hesitation, every unspoken word melted away as we surrendered to the moment.
When we finally pulled apart, breathless, Jennie's forehead rested against mine. "You're impossible," she whispered.
I chuckled softly, my grip on her tightening. "And you love it."
She didn't deny it. Instead, she kissed me again, slower this time, as if savoring every second. And in that moment, nothing else mattered-no enemies, no wars, no past wounds. Just us.
Later That Night
After the intensity of our moment, we sat side by side on the couch, a bottle of whiskey between us. The safe house was eerily quiet, with most of the team already asleep or lost in their own thoughts. Jennie traced patterns on the rim of her glass, her mind clearly occupied.
"Do you ever wonder what life would be like if we weren't... this?" I asked, breaking the silence.
Jennie looked at me, her gaze softening. "You mean if we weren't born into this world?"
I nodded. "Yeah. If we were just... normal."
She exhaled, leaning back against the couch. "I used to think about it. But now? This is all I know."
I tilted my head, studying her. "But do you ever wish for something else?"
Jennie hesitated, her fingers tightening around her glass. "Maybe. But wishing doesn't change reality. And in this reality, I have to be strong. I have to protect the people I love."
My heart clenched at her words. I reached for her hand again, squeezing it gently. "You don't always have to be strong, Jennie. You can lean on me."
She looked at me then, really looked at me, as if seeing me in a new light. And when she finally smiled-a small, rare, genuine smile-I felt something inside me shift.
"I know," she whispered, and in that moment, it was enough.
The Morning After
The sun streamed through the windows, casting a warm glow over the room. Jennie was still asleep beside me on the couch, her head resting against my shoulder. I didn't move, didn't want to disturb the rare moment of peace she had found. Instead, I just watched her, memorizing every detail.
She looked so different like this-peaceful, unguarded. And as I sat there, my heart pounded with a realization I had been trying to ignore for too long.
I was falling for her.
And there was no turning back now.
