Lost in thought, I arrived at Montgomery Tower carrying my son's urn.
The building was packed with the state's business elite and old-money families, all gathered to celebrate Montgomery Corporation's thirtieth anniversary.
Grayson stood in the center of it all, sharp in his tailored suit, radiating arrogance and success.
His secretary Lindsay clung to his arm in a designer dress, playing the perfect plus-one.
I walked in stone-faced, immediately catching Lindsay's pouty whining:
"Gray, I'm so sorry. This is all my fault—now your wife wants to divorce you because of me."
Grayson touched her nose tenderly, his voice soft as silk: "Don't be silly, babe. I'm loaded, and Vivian's obsessed with me. She'd never actually divorce me. She's just throwing a tantrum—ignore it."
Then his eyes found me.
That gentle expression turned ice-cold instantly:
"Vivian, didn't I tell you to bring my son to Montgomery Corp's anniversary gala today?"
"And you show up alone!"
Seeing me, the elite crowd started snickering and whispering:
"That's Mrs. Montgomery? Looks like some small-town nobody who wandered in off the street."
"Just a stay-at-home mom who raises kids all day. Obviously can't compete with us business leaders."
"No wonder Grayson's into his secretary. His wife looks like she shops at Walmart—totally beneath him."
The crowd's mockery made Lindsay's smile turn smug.
Then she put on her victim face, eyes welling up as she looked at me:
"Vivian, I know I shouldn't have gotten pregnant and caused problems between you and Gray."
"If you really hate me that much, just yell at me. But don't punish little Mason by refusing to bring him here, and don't dress like you're going to a funeral."
"You know all the business elite are here today. This is embarrassing for the Montgomery family and making Gray look bad..."
Lindsay's fake-noble act made Grayson's eyes soften with appreciation.
The crowd was eating up her performance too.
But I just stared at her coldly: "I don't give a shit if you want to be some man's side piece."
"But don't you dare mention my son. You're not worthy."
The ballroom went dead silent.
Then Grayson's face darkened: "Vivian, watch yourself!"
"Watch myself?"
I let out a bitter laugh: "You mean remember I'm Mrs. Montgomery?"
"Honestly, I couldn't care less about that title."
Grayson glared at me, his expression black as thunder: "You don't care?"
"Then why are you secretly funneling my money to your dad so that working-class loser can drive around in a Rolls-Royce?"
"If you actually had any pride, you'd stop stealing from me to bankroll your family!"
Because I didn't want my background to pressure Grayson or hurt his pride, I'd asked my father to keep a low profile.
Never imagined Grayson would see my dad's occasional slip-ups and assume my family was living off stolen money.
I smiled at Grayson knowingly: "You really underestimate me."
