Grayson's mother shot me a disgusted look: "I think you overestimate yourself!"
"If you hadn't lucked into marrying into the Montgomery family, you think you could've played rich housewife all these years?"
"Since you've lived off Montgomery money, just shut up and be a good little housewife. Stop being ungrateful and embarrassing yourself!"
The crowd eagerly piled on:
"Right! This housewife should be grateful. Mr. Montgomery's the state's richest man—women are lining up to be Mrs. Montgomery!"
"If I could marry him, I'd happily serve him and however many mistresses he wanted!"
"When you marry into wealth, you better act like it. Don't get too big for your britches."
"The more useless a woman is, the bigger her attitude. People like her with no money or power are always the most dramatic!"
Amid the ridicule, Grayson looked at me with pure disgust:
"I know you're just jealous of Lindsay."
"But she's my secretary—great family background, incredible talent. Without her help these past years, Montgomery Corp couldn't have grown this fast."
"All you do is babysit, and you can't even do that right. What makes you think you can compete with her?"
Montgomery Corp grew because of Lindsay's help?
I laughed.
Without me secretly funneling resources to Montgomery Corp and blocking competitors, those rivals would've eaten the company alive years ago.
Lindsay blushed prettily, then turned to Grayson: "Gray, you always said Vivian was great at raising Mason. But now I see his intelligence and good behavior come from your superior genes."
"He's about to be an Ivy League student and inherit Montgomery Corp. I'm worried Vivian's attitude might be a bad influence on him..."
Grayson's brow furrowed with anger.
He stared at me, his voice ice-cold: "Vivian, I was gonna let you raise Lindsay's baby too, since you did okay with Mason."
"But look what you've turned him into! Out all night yesterday, won't even answer his phone today."
"I don't care if you want to act crazy, but don't screw up my heir. I invited all these business leaders to network with him, set up his future. My son needs to be a success like me—someone people respect!"
Watching Grayson's righteous performance, my heart ached as I said quietly:
"Stop pretending to be father of the year."
"If you really cared about your son, you wouldn't have dumped him on the side of the road in a thunderstorm on his way to the SATs—all because your mistress called!"
Thinking of my sweet boy dying on the most important day of his life, abandoned by the father he idolized, the pain nearly broke me.
Grayson exploded: "So I didn't drive him to his test! How long are you gonna throw a fit over something so stupid?"
"You're petty as hell—not mother material, and definitely not fit to be Mrs. Montgomery!"
"You want a divorce? Fine! Just bring my son here and I'll divorce you right now!"
His voice boomed through the ballroom like he'd finally had enough of me.
Grayson's mother quickly chimed in: "You should've done this ages ago. Vivian's just some clueless nobody—completely wrong for our family."
"Different social classes don't mix. My precious grandson will lose all his proper upbringing if he stays with her."
The other Montgomery relatives joined the attack:
"Bring out our young master right now! Don't let your trashy influence ruin such a promising boy!"
Seeing the whole family gang up on me, Lindsay smiled triumphantly, shooting me a look of pure victory.
The elite crowd praised Grayson's decision, calling me unworthy, saying I was beneath the Montgomery family and only brought them shame.
Looking at all their ugly, self-righteous faces, I laughed.
Grayson cheating and fathering bastards was perfectly fine.
But me—having done nothing wrong—became their target for abuse.
Fucking hypocrites.
I took a deep breath and looked straight at Grayson: "I brought your son."
Grayson scanned the room, frowning: "Where?"
The other Montgomerys craned their necks, searching for Mason.
Grayson's mother even put on her reading glasses, squinting around the ballroom: "Where's my precious grandson?"
I pulled the urn from my bag and slammed it down on the head table:
"Right here!"
