The loud crash of the urn slamming onto the table made everyone in the room flinch.
They all gawked at me like I'd just crawled out of a horror movie.
Dead silence for two beats.
Lindsay was the first to recover, putting on her best horrified face:
"Oh my God, Vivian! Gray asked you to bring Mason, and you show up with... ashes? Are you completely unhinged?"
"I mean, throw your little tantrum if you want, but cursing your own child and ruining Montgomery Corp's big night? That's just sick."
Her words triggered a wave of disgusted reactions from the crowd:
"Jesus Christ, what kind of mother curses her own kid?"
"Typical trailer trash—no class, just pure crazy. She'd burn down her whole life for some petty revenge!"
"That poor boy, having a complete psycho for a mom."
"This is exactly why we don't let gutter rats into society. They just poison everything they touch."
They all stepped back from me like I was radioactive waste.
Grayson's mother was hyperventilating, fanning herself dramatically.
Then she jabbed her finger at me, shrieking: "You absolute monster! Where is my grandson?!"
I gestured toward the urn: "I literally just told you—he's right fucking here."
"Are you out of your goddamn mind?!" Grayson's face was purple with rage: "I've been way too easy on you. That's why you think you can pull this psychotic shit and get away with it!"
I met his glare head-on: "You think I'm lying? Why don't you actually check instead of running your mouth?"
That made Grayson whip out his phone, speed-dialing the house manager:
"Drop everything and find my son. I don't care what it takes—bring him here NOW!"
After hanging up, he turned back to me with pure venom: "Nice try with your little mind games, but I'm not buying your delusional bullshit."
"When I find Mason, you're gonna regret this stunt. You'll never see him again, you crazy bitch!"
His voice was ice-cold, every word a threat.
But I didn't even blink: "The only person who's gonna regret anything is you, Grayson."
The elite crowd burst into cruel laughter:
"Holy shit, this chick's completely lost it! Some nobody housewife thinks she can threaten Mr. Montgomery?"
"It's pathetic, really. Without him, she'd still be living in some shitty apartment. Instead of kissing his ass, she's acting like she has power?"
"First the psycho ashes thing, now empty threats—this is what happens when poor people snap, I guess."
Everyone stared at me like I was the world's most pathetic joke.
Grayson looked at me with pure disgust: "Marrying you was the worst fucking decision I ever made."
Right then, his phone buzzed.
Seeing the house manager's name, Grayson hit speaker so the whole room could hear him expose my "lies."
The manager's shaky voice crackled through the silent ballroom:
"Mr. Montgomery, I... I just finished checking everything, and I found out that your son... he died on the day you were driving him to take his SATs!"
