The entire room went dead silent, faces draining of color.
Grayson looked like he'd been hit by a truck: "That's impossible!"
"Are you absolutely sure you got this right?"
The manager's voice was rock-solid: "I've triple-checked everything, sir."
"Mr. Montgomery, after you dumped your son on the side of the road that day, he couldn't catch a ride. He was running like hell trying to get to his test when a semi truck plowed right into him. Killed him on impact."
Each word hit the ballroom like a sledgehammer.
Grayson went white as a sheet, hands shaking as he hung up.
The whole crowd was struck speechless.
"What... what the hell just happened?"
Grayson's mother looked completely shell-shocked, staring at the urn before turning to Grayson with a trembling voice: "My precious grandson is really... gone?"
Grayson said absolutely nothing, just stood there like a statue.
In the crushing silence, Lindsay suddenly turned to Grayson, tears streaming down her face:
"Oh God, Gray, this is all my fault!"
"If I hadn't told you about the pregnancy, you wouldn't have rushed over to me, and your son would still be alive."
"I killed him! I should just go die and make it right!"
She made this dramatic move toward the exit like she was gonna throw herself off a bridge.
Terrified of losing his precious mistress, Grayson grabbed her and pulled her close, his voice soft as butter: "Don't be ridiculous, sweetheart. This isn't on you."
"It was just Mason's time."
"I was gonna announce him as Montgomery Corp's heir tonight, but his death made me realize something."
"Maybe he was never meant to inherit the company. I mean, why else would he die on the exact same day you told me about the baby?"
"This proves that your child is Montgomery Corp's true heir. Mason died to make room for our kid."
Hearing this twisted logic, Grayson's mother's grief instantly transformed into sick joy:
"Yes, yes! Lindsay, this is divine intervention!"
"Vivian's genes were clearly defective, so God himself wanted your baby to be the Montgomery heir!"
The elite crowd eagerly jumped on this sick bandwagon:
"Exactly! Why didn't that truck hit someone else? Why did it happen on the exact day Lindsay announced her pregnancy? This is obviously God's will!"
"Vivian's been so ungrateful that even heaven got fed up. God doesn't want her bloodline anywhere near Montgomery Corp."
"When you think about it, this is actually fantastic news!"
"Right! Lindsay and Grayson are meant to be together. Only their child can make Montgomery Corp truly great!"
Watching this obscene display, my already dead heart sank even deeper.
From the time he could walk, Mason had worshipped Grayson.
He used to say he'd study hard to make daddy proud.
He'd say he wanted to be a powerful man just like his father.
I'd been worried that Mason loved Grayson so much, watching his hero fall from grace might break his heart.
But now, seeing Grayson learn he'd killed his own son and not shed a single tear?
I had zero concerns left.
