My in-laws, Barnabas and Imogene Miller, always favored boys over girls.
After I gave birth, I was so weak I couldn't eat or even sit up.
I could barely move and needed help just to get through the day.
But Barnabas and Imogene ignored me completely.
When I asked for some help, something totally reasonable,
They sneered and said, "You popped out a worthless girl and expect us to take care of you?"
I turned to my husband for support, asked if we could hire a part-time nurse for just a month.
A thousand bucks.
Not much, considering I'd handed him all my savings and paychecks.
But he just looked at me like I was disgusting: "We've got bills piling up everywhere."
"Where do you think we're gonna find money for a nanny?"
"Figure it out yourself."
But when Cletus and his wife had a baby boy?
Suddenly, everything changed.
They dropped a few grand on fancy vitamins and splurged over ten thousand on a luxury stroller without blinking.
Lobster, ribeye, gourmet crap every day.
Whatever their grandson wanted, no matter how pricey, he got it.
And my daughter?
She picked out a one-dollar lollipop at the gas station,
And they screamed at her for a week, calling her a spoiled brat.
They blamed me for "ruining her."
In my last life, when their precious grandson Jethro was diagnosed with stomach cancer, they couldn't find a donor match for months.
Every tiny symptom made them panic.
If Jethro so much as sneezed, the whole family rushed him to the hospital.
One time, Imogene came home and slapped my daughter across the face.
Said Jethro got sick from breathing in smoke from our old heater.
From that day on, they banned us from using it.
Sera came to me sobbing,
"Mommy, Grandma said no fire… but it's so cold without the heater…"
That tiny electric heater was the only way we stayed warm all winter.
But now? This time around?
I want to see how they react if I say it's Sera who has kidney cancer.
Suddenly, the room went dead quiet.
My husband looked at me first, putting on his fake sad face.
"How… how could this happen?"
"She's just a little girl…"
Even Imogene dropped her usual sharp tone and let out a dramatic sigh.
"My poor baby girl… life's just too cruel!"
Barnabas and Cletus chimed in with phony sympathy:
"Lord above, what kind of God lets a child suffer like that?"
My husband glanced at me, trying to look like the guy I fell for.
"Elspeth Carter… is there any treatment?"
"No matter how slim the chance, we can't give up."
Then Imogene added,
"You know we don't have much… and we've still got Jethro to raise."
"He's our flesh and blood too."
"We should ask your parents to pay."
"They put up the money, we handle the care."
"That's fair, right?"
Everyone nodded.
Of course they liked that plan.
They didn't have to spend a single dime.
I stared at their ugly, greedy faces, cold laughter curling inside me.
They were already thinking of how to funnel any money into Jethro.
Their fake concern didn't fool me for a second.
I put on a pained face and nodded.
"The doctor said… as long as we find a matching kidney, Sera has a chance."
They all looked at each other, nodding like puppets.
"Good, good, let's pray for a match."
I looked up and added,
"I was thinking—maybe Cletus's son could get tested."
"The doctor said family matches are more likely."
The second I said it, the room exploded.
They jumped out of their seats like they'd been electrocuted.
"You want MY grandson to get tested?"
"Are you outta your mind?"
"That sick little girl doesn't deserve anything from my baby boy!"
"My son is worth more than your kid ever will be!"
As their insults hit me like knives, my heart turned colder.
Just like before.
Still the same selfish, two-faced monsters.
My hand clenched tighter around the test results.
