Back at the dorm, my roommates were chatting and laughing:
"This is hilarious—those videos are everywhere. Shutting down the forum did nothing."
"Right! You seemed to enjoy yourself in the moment, so why the act now?"
I took a deep breath and grabbed my clothes, heading to the bathroom.
Their snickering continued outside, like they were plotting something.
Hot water streamed over my body as I applied body wash.
The next moment, my skin erupted in dense, tiny red bumps.
Something was wrong with the body wash.
I whipped my head around and spotted toilet bowl cleaner tossed in the trash—obviously empty.
Hot water mixed with the cleaner, streaming down my skin. The red bumps slowly turned into dense clusters of blisters, stinging and numbing my limbs.
"So gross, she looks disgusting."
"Quick, film this!"
"Hahaha, she really is allergic to this stuff!"
I recognized the ringleader—she'd disliked me since I moved into this room.
Later I found out she was Isla's friend.
I pulled out my phone to call the cops, but they immediately pinned me down and grabbed it.
"Let me see if you secretly added my boyfriend's number."
"Give it back!"
We struggled until we ended up in the counselor's office.
"Sorry for the trouble, professor."
One crisis after another, I was the "star" again.
The video controversy was huge, and it was recruitment season.
To avoid affecting admissions, the school started handling the situation—handling me.
"Ivy, I'm sorry, but the school is expelling you."
I insisted on pressing charges, only to watch Isla sweet-talk my mother into signing a settlement: "Auntie, my friend can't go to jail. She worked so hard to get here from the projects..."
My roommate also begged my mother:
"Ma'am, in my family we have this tradition—toilet cleaner purifies the body. I was just trying to help Ivy..."
"You're lying! You knew I was allergic to toilet cleaner…"
Slap.
My mother's final slap ended the whole drama.
She grabbed the pen and signed quickly. "Stop embarrassing yourself! Pack your things and come home."
I stood there covering my face, stunned for a long time.
She knew I'd always been proud and cared about my reputation.
Yet she slapped me in front of everyone.
In that moment, I suddenly understood.
She hated me.
Hated that I'd shown up in her belly at the wrong time.
Hated that my unexpected existence had blocked her path to studying abroad.
After Dad's scandal broke, she was the one who contacted the media.
I laughed bitterly:
"Mom, if you hate me, why did you have me?"
She didn't answer, just pushed me aside and walked away.
After leaving campus, I slowly walked to Boston Harbor where staff were bustling around, apparently prepping some kind of wedding banquet.
"The Hartwell family's loaded—booking this whole waterfront just for an engagement party."
"Right? Money really does flow to people who already have money."
"The bride's so lucky—set for life."
"Hey, you can't go in there."
Someone spotted me and whispered:
"Is that the girl from the recent video?"
"Looks like her."
"Her face is so swollen—did her family beat her up?"
"Definitely. If I did that, my parents would've broken my legs."
I sat on a public bench outside the perimeter, spacing out.
Right now I had no money and had been expelled.
Mom didn't want me either.
The harbor water sparkled beautifully under the lights.
Before I knew it, I was standing outside the railing.
"Someone's gonna jump!"
The scream pierced Boston's bustling night.
Crowds rushed over—reporters, janitors, livestreamers.
They moved so fast I didn't have time to jump before being surrounded.
The video was trending, someone recognized me, and suddenly cameras and flashing lights surrounded me.
Xavier and Isla stood in the crowd, making me look like a performing clown on stage.
Isla shouted anxiously:
"Ivy, don't do anything stupid!"
But I saw the clear provocation in her eyes.
My humiliation and desperation on full display.
No, don't film me.
I instinctively raised my hand to cover my face.
Just as I lost my balance and started falling straight into the water, Isla suddenly rushed over and grabbed my wrist.
Seeing the churning waves below, I finally got scared.
But then I saw Isla smirk:
"Wanna die? I'll make it happen."
My heart jumped.
She then pried my fingers off the bridge edge one by one.
No!
She screamed and fell into the water with me.
Less than a minute later, she was rescued.
I struggled desperately, but could only watch helplessly as icy seawater flooded into my lungs, choking me so badly I couldn't even scream for help.
I didn't feel someone pulling me out until I lost consciousness.
Xavier's gaze lazily fell on me:
"Just keep her barely alive."
"Since she wants to die, no need for the good meds."
