Major media showed up to document this grand engagement between Boston's golden boy and the study-abroad heiress.
Everyone except Ivy.
Some said she'd dropped out after her failed suicide attempt, too ashamed to stay on campus.
Others said her mother shipped her off somewhere to reflect on her actions.
Lots of speculation, but nobody actually cared.
Because tonight, Xavier Hartwell and Isla Bennett's engagement party was starting on the yacht.
All their friends were there.
My roommate even wanted to livestream this romantic event for me.
But I only glanced at it once before deleting her.
Then she texted: [How dare you delete me?]
I replied:
[Thanks for reminding me—almost forgot to block you too.]
The boarding announcement echoed through the terminal.
"Passengers, please gather your belongings and board the aircraft."
Right—I should just toss the SIM card.
After doing that, I leaned against the airplane window, watching the exhaust streak by, and closed my eyes to rest.
In my dreams, I went back to senior year of high school.
Back then, I was constantly getting sick from exam stress and had to go to the hospital for medication.
In the back garden, I met a guy.
He couldn't see, and seemed really down.
I'd often go talk to him.
His eyes were wrapped in gauze, only showing his sharp jawline.
He looked a lot like Xavier.
I jolted awake.
The plane had already landed.
Back on the Boston yacht, Xavier couldn't find that familiar face in the crowd.
A weird restlessness crept into his heart.
He even forgot to grab the flowers during the proposal.
His buddy nudged him:
"Yo Xavier, what's up? You forgot the flowers."
Ahead of him, Isla stood in a white dress, smiling sweetly at him.
He immediately smiled back.
Yeah, what was he thinking about?
Where Ivy went now was none of his business.
He loved Isla, and now he was getting what he wanted, right?
"Kiss! Kiss!"
After the flower ceremony, everyone started cheering.
Nobody expected things to go wrong right then.
Screech.
The yacht's big screen, which had been looping sweet videos and photos of the couple, suddenly cut out.
Instead, Isla's twisted face appeared with her shrill voice.
"You old bastard, I destroyed your reputation once, and now I can destroy your daughter's too."
"I'm getting engaged to the Hartwell heir."
"And Ivy's been expelled now, lost her graduate school spot too."
"Look at her now—she looks like a freak, hahaha."
As she spoke, Isla showed her phone to the man on the other end, displaying a video.
On screen, Ivy's arms and legs were covered in dense red welts and scars.
Then came a hoarse male voice confessing:
"I'm sorry to meet you all this way. My name is David Sterling, the teacher accused of harassment three years ago."
"As a father, I've failed my daughter most of all."
He choked up suddenly.
"I let her suffer from rumors all these years because of me, when she did absolutely nothing wrong. It was my mistake."
"Back then, I discovered that Isla's parents had embezzled school funds and urged them to turn themselves in."
"I never expected them to die in a car crash while fleeing. Feeling guilty, I took in Isla. But Isla thought I'd killed her parents to advance my career and was willing to sacrifice her own reputation for revenge."
The truth about the harassment case from three years ago finally came to light.
Victoria Sterling's pupils contracted. Her heart ached with sharp, stabbing pain.
All along, she'd never trusted her husband or believed her daughter.
David Sterling also saw all the vicious attacks and cyberbullying directed at his precious daughter.
All these years, he'd wondered if he'd made the wrong choice.
He had no real skills, just his worthless life.
So at the end of the video, the man took poison and killed himself.
