When the plane landed, national TV crew members were there to meet us.
Getting off the car, I saw a familiar figure.
Just three years, and the woman looked much more haggard.
Victoria Sterling waited anxiously outside.
Seeing me emerge, her eyes reddened as she moved to check my injuries.
But I instinctively dodged.
Her outstretched hand froze.
The woman who commanded boardrooms opened and closed her mouth, unable to speak.
I smiled politely:
"Ma'am, is there something else you need?"
She shook her head:
"Mom saw the news and just wanted to see you..."
She paused, suddenly choking up:
"And... Mom misses you…"
"Alright, alright, everyone without business please step back."
The woman's unfinished words were cut off.
Security escorted me to the RV.
Standing on the high podium, I felt praise washing over me from all directions.
Some reporters recognized me as the girl from that old video.
My identity got exposed again.
Microphones shoved in my face:
"Ms. Sterling, is it true that you were expelled three years ago for inappropriate conduct while in college?"
"Did you use other means to achieve your current success?"
"Some say your current mentor had no prior connection to you—how did you get into the research group?"
Emma didn't know the backstory but could sense the hostility and tried to help me deflect.
But once one person spoke up, countless others would rush forward.
"Yeah, Ms. Sterling, we all want to know—care to share?"
"Ms. Sterling, please answer."
In the chaos, a low, clear voice cut through.
"Ms. Sterling, I'd like to discuss funding for a new project with you."
Xavier had arrived too.
At events like this, not responding was the best response.
That reporter's question fell flat with no one picking it up.
When he tried to press again, he'd already been pushed out of the front row.
Emma whispered to me:
"Ivy, does he like you?"
"He keeps staring at you."
"I think he's pretty hot."
Emma didn't know about the past and thought Xavier was trying to pursue me.
I just smiled without explaining.
These days, I wasn't deliberately avoiding him.
But all our communication and conversations only revolved around funding.
That was it.
No point refusing free money.
At the academic conference, other scholars came to chat with me:
"Ms. Sterling is truly accomplished for her age."
I smiled modestly:
"Not at all—you're the impressive one."
"I wonder if Ms. Sterling has someone special?"
I shook my head:
"That's wonderful—my son is currently…"
"No."
Xavier's presence felt ice-cold.
He cut off the man's matchmaking attempt, forcefully dragging me to the end of the hallway.
"Let me go!"
He pinned me against the wall corner, stubborn in his tone:
"Ivy, look at me."
"I can help you network in this field—you won't need to socialize."
"No one in this industry will badmouth you anymore."
The next day when I got back, Emma told me the reporter who'd given me trouble had been blacklisted from the industry and permanently banned from working in journalism.
"What, you want me to be grateful?"
"Didn't you create my situation in the first place?"
"What's with the deep, caring act?"
I frowned, completely baffled.
His eyes were red: "It's been three years. Don't be so heartless."
Over the years, I'd occasionally heard about his exploits—
Heard that the roommate who got my graduate spot was doing grunt work under her advisor.
The one who poured toilet cleaner in my body wash had her family's jobs destroyed. Only when she poured cleaner on herself in front of Xavier did he let her off.
But talking about being heartless—he'd been way more heartless back then.
"I didn't know it was you back then…"
I slapped him hard, cutting him off:
"Xavier Hartwell, ignorance isn't a get-out-of-jail-free card."
"I will never, ever forgive you."
After that, he didn't try to stop me again.
After returning home, I'd been swamped with various conferences.
Xavier hadn't bothered me either.
I thought he'd finally gotten the message.
Today was the final academic banquet and I could finally rest for a while.
Returning to my apartment, a familiar figure stood downstairs—someone I hadn't seen in days.
The moment I realized something was wrong, my body went limp.
The next second, I collapsed into that person's arms.
