I stood there like I'd been hit by a truck, blood turning to ice.
Fifteen years of my life couldn't compete with one damn month of his perfect match.
I turned to bail but smashed straight into a waiter with a tray full of drinks.
Glass shattered everywhere, and the door flew open. Blake saw me standing there like an idiot. His face dropped.
"Liv? How much did you hear?" He frowned.
I just nodded. No point lying.
Blake's face did this weird thing: "So now you get how crazy I am about Sophia."
"Don't try to mess up this proposal. You can't stop it anyway..."
"Chill," I cut him off with a fake smile. "I won't be at your little proposal."
I paused: "Because—"
That's when I'm getting the hell out of this country.
Before I could finish, Blake's phone blasted Sophia's special ringtone.
He grabbed it like it was a winning lottery ticket, voice going all sugary: "Hey baby, just with the guys. Coming home soon..."
I slipped away while he was busy being whipped.
I walked out with my head high and my steps solid, like I'd finally dropped a 200-pound backpack I'd been lugging around.
When Blake hung up, he noticed I'd disappeared.
He stared down the empty hallway, kinda remembering I'd started to say something, but he'd been too busy with Sophia's call to care.
Whatever. Probably nothing worth hearing anyway.
He shrugged it off and went back to his bros.
The day Blake scheduled his big proposal show, my visa finally came through.
I went home, called the realtor, signed the final paperwork, and grabbed my bags.
In the taxi to the airport, my phone wouldn't stop buzzing.
Our friend group was live-texting Blake's proposal like it was the Super Bowl.
[OMG Blake rented THE ENTIRE AMUSEMENT PARK!]
[Fireworks are insane—full Disney theme, Sophia's obsession!]
[Ring is custom, FIVE FREAKING CARATS!]
I closed the chat and pulled up my texts with Blake.
His last message from a month ago: "Liv, I miss you."
My fingers hovered over the keyboard forever before I typed:
"Blake, good luck with your proposal. Like you wanted, we won't see each other again."
The second I sent it, his "typing..." bubble popped up.
Blake shot back: "Just don't stalk me anymore, that's all I'm asking. Not seeing each other? That's impossible—we know all the same people. After I seal the deal, I'll buy you dinner."
I stared at his message and actually laughed out loud.
Even now, he still thought I'd be hanging around like some desperate puppy.
I didn't bother replying. Just hit block.
The boarding call came over the speakers. I popped out my SIM card, snapped it in half, and tossed it in the trash.
On the plane, the flight attendant showed me to my seat with a plastic smile.
"This flight is headed to London Heathrow. Flight time is eleven hours and twenty-five minutes."
I nodded and clicked my seatbelt.
The plane taxied, sped up, and finally took off.
Out the window, the city I'd wasted twenty-three years in got smaller and smaller, finally vanishing under the clouds.
I remembered when we were sixteen, after Blake's parents died. How he stood there at sunset saying: "Liv, it's just you and me now."
I closed my eyes.
Blake, I'm done being your backup plan.
From now on, there's an ocean between us. And that's exactly how I want it.
