Blake's guy nodded and spun around, almost smacking into Sophia standing in the doorway.
"Miss Sophia," he mumbled before bolting.
Blake's face flipped from total ice to gooey marshmallow the second he spotted her.
"Baby, why aren't you sleeping? Was I too loud?" He tucked a blanket around her shoulders and pulled her against him like she was made of glass.
Sophia did this little worried pout:
"Can't sleep without you. Wanted to see what's keeping you up."
"Heard you talking about Liv. What's going on? Did she ghost everyone? Is it because of me?"
On cue, tears started rolling down her cheeks.
Blake looked gut-punched. He tilted her face up and planted a soft kiss on her lips.
"No way. She's just throwing some tantrum. Who cares anyway?"
But Sophia kept the worried act going, her face all tragic and vulnerable:
"But you guys were basically raised together. What if she's hurt or something?"
Blake stroked her hair, his voice hardening: "Doesn't matter. She's nothing to me. If something happened, good—maybe she'll finally back off."
"She's always trying to worm her way between us."
I bet Sophia was eating this up, probably hiding a little victory smile behind that innocent face.
She was probably praying I'd stay gone forever and never mess up their perfect little bubble.
Despite all that tough talk to Sophia, Blake still had his guys searching everywhere for me.
He kept checking their reports one after another.
My usual spots, his party hangouts.
Zero trace of me anywhere.
With each update, I imagine his confidence cracking.
Where had I disappeared to? Why couldn't his people find me? Was I really that serious about cutting him out?
He probably figured I was just sulking about his engagement and needed to cool off.
But since that day, I'd completely vanished.
In a weird moment, he suddenly remembered how sad I looked whenever I saw him with Sophia.
Even my injuries at the hospital—all that stuff came flooding back.
Back then, he was so damn cocky, thinking I loved him so much that even if he ignored me for Sophia, I'd stick around. I'd keep worshipping at his feet.
That's why when I said I'd never see him again, he blew it off.
Now my final words were probably haunting him.
I really had meant to leave him for good.
He glanced at the photo of him and Sophia on his desk, suddenly remembering it had replaced the only picture of us together.
That photo only existed because I'd practically begged him to take it with me.
After fifteen years, that single picture was all we had.
Blake walked to his study door and looked around. His place used to have my fingerprints all over it.
Because he caught colds easily, I'd stashed medicine in every corner.
Because he was gaming-obsessed, I'd set up the perfect gear for him.
Even his shoe rack was packed with sneakers I'd hunted down for him.
Now, like me, all that stuff was gone.
Blake stared at some empty corner, probably realizing he had zero ways to reach me.
It had always been me chasing him. Me caring about his food, his health, his everything.
Now that I wasn't doing the heavy lifting anymore, he found not only could he not find me, but his life suddenly had this huge hole in it.
Blake shook it off, refusing to deal with it.
Whatever. He had Sophia now, and his dream girl had said yes.
With that thought, Blake asked: "Where's Sophia today?"
His guy answered with a little bow: "Miss Sophia's shopping at your family's mall. Brought a friend and dropped over two million already."
"Get the car. I'm picking up Sophia."
