I went downstairs to buy some food, hoping to lift my spirits. By the time I returned, night had fallen over the streets.
My apartment was close to campus but in a secluded area.
As I walked down a narrow street, the streetlight flickered once or twice.
Eerie. I quickened my pace.
Suddenly, a sharp whistle cut through the silent night.
Three oddly dressed young men emerged from an alley. The one with bleached hair whistled at me.
"Hey, college girl! You go to school around here, right?"
I was in such a foul mood that I didn't want to deal with these thugs, but they slowly began to surround me.
"Aww, look at those red eyes. Been crying, sweetheart?"
"None of your damn business."
"Feisty, aren't you?"
The bleached-hair guy grabbed my wrist with his pale, claw-like hand. I yanked myself free.
"Don't touch me!"
I raised my voice, but there were hardly any occupied buildings nearby.
"Go ahead, scream all you want..." he leered, leaning in to kiss me. Despite my struggles, he was stronger.
A dark figure suddenly burst from the alley, knocking the thug away from me.
The figure pushed me toward the street.
"Call the police," he said.
The newcomer wore a black hoodie, but I recognized his voice immediately.
Kenton.
"You son of a bitch, ruining my fun?" The bleached-hair guy spat, rolling up his sleeve before lunging at Kenton.
Four or five thugs attacked at once. No matter how fit Kenton was, he couldn't handle that many.
Within moments, they had him on the ground. He curled up to minimize the pain.
But his eyes remained fixed on me.
"Olivia, what are you waiting for? Run!"
I stood motionless.
"Olivia, don't just stand there. RUN!"
Still, I didn't move.
He took a kick to the stomach. I knew it hurt badly, but he only let out a small whimper.
Then the bleached-hair guy paused, yanking Kenton's head up by his hair.
"Heh, you haven't figured it out yet?"
"We weren't after the girl at all. You were our target all along!"
I met Kenton's shocked expression, but it lasted only a moment.
He just kept looking at me. I searched his eyes for something—anything—that would satisfy me, but found nothing.
I didn't want to see love in his eyes anymore.
Yes, I had called these thugs myself.
For days, Kenton had been lurking near my apartment.
He probably thought I hadn't noticed, but he followed me every time I went out.
So I arranged this scene with the thugs.
"I won't call the police for you, Kenton."
"Enjoy yourself."
I turned and walked home, the sounds of punches and kicks following me. Later, the bleached-hair guy told me Kenton had been tough.
Despite the beating, he never cried out once.
