Afterward, Kenton didn't go to the hospital, nor did he report it to the police.
For a long time, there was no news of him.
Until he missed so many classes that the school started looking for him.
His divorced parents were both abroad.
His grandfather, the painter who had raised him, had passed away years ago.
Then one day, he suddenly called me.
He used an unknown number, which is why I answered.
I looked at myself in the mirror and took a deep breath.
Then I unleashed every curse word I'd ever learned.
"Who the hell do you think you're talking to?"
"Fuck off and leave me alone!"
"You're a complete waste of space!"
He listened quietly as I berated him.
When I finished, my mouth was dry. Then I heard him laugh on the other end.
"Olivia, it's been so long since I heard your voice."
"Have you no shame?"
He just kept laughing. Wind rushed through the phone, enveloping his voice.
"If I disappeared, would you miss me?"
A quiet question, straightforward as always.
"No."
"Kenton, if you're thinking about killing yourself, leave me out of it."
I'd heard from his friends recently that Kenton had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, though he'd never told me.
Of course he wouldn't tell me. He was too proud.
They said that his inexplicable, confusing behaviors before might have been related to his condition.
"Kill myself? But I'd miss you too much."
"Unless you'd be willing to visit me on my death anniversary each year?"
"Visit you? Don't flatter yourself, Kenton."
I scoffed.
"If I saw people buying flowers to visit you, I'd steal them."
"That would be nice too. At least you'd come see me every year."
How could he always twist things to see the positive side for himself?
"Olivia, I love you."
"Go to hell!"
"Yes, when we first got together, my intentions weren't pure... but later, I truly fell for you."
"I told you to go to hell. Are you deaf?"
"I always knew this day might come—when you'd discover what I'd done before. I figured I wouldn't be able to exist in your world anymore."
He took a deep breath and continued, "but at what point did you become my entire world?"
"Kenton, stop saying this bullshit."
"Kenton..."
"Kenton."
I gripped the phone tightly, calling his name.
But all I heard was the howling wind and the distant sound of traffic.
For some reason, I remembered the last birthday I celebrated with him—putting that silly crown from the bakery on his head.
Back then, we thought we'd spend our whole lives together.
From dawn to dusk.
Year after year after year.
