Kenton's POV
Can a guy tell when a girl likes him?
The answer is, of course he can.
Kenton knew early on that Olivia had feelings for him.
He'd merely reached out a hand when she was being bullied, and suddenly she had eyes only for him.
Even though he was actually the mastermind behind it all, she treated him like her lifeline.
A secret satisfaction grew in the shadows where no one could see.
Later, when they got together, he initially enjoyed this feeling.
Someone who adored him, while he had secretly tormented her all along.
But sometimes things didn't unfold as Kenton had planned.
His original scheme was to play with Olivia until he got bored, then brutally dump her.
But he kept postponing it.
During summer break, they went to Eagle Mountain. He showed her that novelty puzzled boxes.
She was so naïve, completely unable to solve it.
In their freshman year, they traveled to Hawaii, where endless blue skies stretched over the broad sea.
On the way back, he kissed her first for the first time.
In the summer of sophomore year, they saved up for a trip to Japan. Among the boundless mountains, watching the magnificent fireworks at the summer festival, he glanced at the girl beside him.
He suddenly felt relieved that Olivia didn't know what had happened back then.
All he needed to do was keep this secret hidden forever.
Early in junior year, he began to notice something wrong with himself.
He increasingly lost control of his emotions, sometimes plunging to extreme lows, other times so manic he couldn't sleep.
This had happened before, but suddenly one day, he began swinging between extreme optimism and extreme pessimism.
Constantly switching between these emotions, he started seeing everyone around him as monstrous—except Olivia.
She remained as quiet and beautiful as ever.
At first, no matter how agitated he became, he could still be gentle with her.
Until one day, he finally snapped at her.
And then it became unstoppable.
He would suddenly lash out at her for no reason, and seeing her shocked face would make something twist painfully in his chest.
Gradually, he grew to hate his body, hate himself. When depressed, he'd take a knife in the kitchen and cut his arms.
After that, every time he lost his temper with her, he'd cut himself once.
Over time, the scattered scars on his arms forced him to wear long sleeves.
His world began to blur.
