Dad?
Everyone standing there thought the same thing at once.
And the next second, heavy, purposeful footsteps echoed down the driveway.
A group of tall, imposing figures appeared at the gate, blocking out the moonlight like a shadow descending.
In an instant, the whole yard turned ice-cold, like something dangerous had just arrived.
Leading them was a man built like a tank, with sharp, piercing eyes, thick dark brows, a broad chest, and the kind of presence that could silence a room.
Richard and Lola's faces instantly turned ghost-white.
No one had expected it.
General Monroe—stationed at the northern border for years—had come back home. Tonight.
If Richard had known, there's no way he would've filed for divorce.
He wouldn't have dared let Lola show her face near me.
The only reason he had the guts was because he assumed Monroe was miles away and clueless.
The moment he saw the Crown Prince, my dad's expression hardened, still carrying the chill of the battlefield.
"Your Highness."
His voice was low and cold, formal as hell.
Then he looked at me, and just like that, his eyes melted into something soft and full of pain.
"Scarlett. Come here to Daddy."
Tears welled up in my eyes. I nodded and yanked my hand out of Richard's grip.
Limping, I made my way toward Dad.
It was only then he noticed I was hurt.
His face went dark in an instant.
"Your Highness, do you know why my daughter's foot is injured?"
His question hit like a bullet. Richard's expression flickered in panic.
"Sir… it's my fault. I failed to protect her."
Dad's brow tightened, and his voice rose with authority.
"Don't call me that. Scarlett is no longer your wife."
"I am not your father-in-law."
"Your wife is that woman on the floor. Not Scarlett."
Richard gave a twitch of a smile, almost like he was trying to suck up.
"You must be joking, sir. Scarlett and I were just playing around."
"She's always been my one and only."
Dad scoffed, then swept me up into his arms and said with a meaningful tone,
"Scarlett, did you hear that loud and clear?"
I wrapped my arms around his neck and replied sweetly,
"Loud and clear, Daddy. I'll do whatever you say."
Richard's face turned even more sour, but Dad didn't flinch.
"Your Highness, it's late. My daughter is unwell. I'll be taking her home now."
"And tomorrow, I'll be giving the President a full report on everything that happened tonight."
"Best wishes to you and your new fiancée."
"May you live happily ever after."
The officers and Monroe's aides behind him echoed loud and clear:
"Best wishes to you and your fiancée."
"May you live happily ever after."
Their voices boomed through the whole estate, lingering in the air like thunder.
The show was over.
On the way home, I asked Dad for one thing.
To dig deeper into Lola.
I just had this gut feeling… she was hiding something bigger.
