"Mr. Parker, please calm down. We're doing everything possible..."
Blake's voice cracked with rage: "Get your chief of medicine down here NOW. I want your top doctors, best equipment. Money? Not a problem!"
Within minutes, they cleared the whole floor. Top doctors flew in from everywhere.
I hung back in the hallway corner, watching Blake pace outside the OR like he might lose his mind.
"Bro, you're bleeding too. At least let someone clean that cut," his friend tried.
"Back off!" Blake shoved him away, voice breaking. "I'm not going anywhere till I know she's okay."
"Blake, the crash wasn't on you. If she hadn't begged you to race on that curvy road—"
"SHUT UP!" Blake punched the wall so hard it dented. "I should've kept her safe."
The OR doors flew open. A nurse rushed out: "Her kidney's ruptured. She needs a transplant right now, but we don't have a match..."
Without missing a beat, Blake rolled up his sleeve. "Test me. Now."
"Dude! Are you crazy?" His friends blocked him. "You've known her for what—a week? Is she worth it?"
Blake's eyes went dead cold: "If she dies, I die. One kidney? I'd give her my heart if that's what it took."
Those words cut through me like a knife.
I stumbled back, knocking over a plant in the hallway.
The crash made Blake turn around. Finally noticing me.
When our eyes met, he frowned like I was a problem to solve.
"Why are you here?"
I lifted my cast. "The mall fire. Fell down the escalator."
Blake's face froze for a second before going blank again. "Right. Take care then."
With that, he followed the nurse to get tested, not even glancing back.
Watching him walk away, I remembered when we were fifteen. Blake had this crazy fever, and I'd snuck out after curfew to get him medicine. Ended up breaking my leg climbing the fence.
Back then, he'd held me and promised: "Liv, from now on, I'll protect you."
Now he couldn't even ask if I was hurting.
The test results came back fast. Perfect match.
Blake signed the forms without blinking and was in surgery that afternoon.
Through the window, I watched them lying on tables side by side.
Blake turned his head and kissed Sophia's forehead while she was out cold.
That was it for me.
The difference between love and not-love really was that obvious.
I'd spent eighteen freaking years trying to get into Blake's heart. Sophia did it in days and got his whole damn soul.
I laughed at myself. That last stupid bit of hope I'd been hanging onto finally died.
Back home, I called my realtor.
"I need to sell my house on Pine Street. Like, yesterday."
That house was my parents' goodbye gift.
When I was in college, my family moved to Canada. I was the stubborn one who stayed behind.
Dad threw his teacup across the room: "You're dumping your family for that Parker boy?"
God, I was such an idiot back then, thinking if I just hung around long enough, Blake would eventually notice me.
Now that Blake had found his soulmate, time to cut the last tie.
The house sold crazy fast.
After signing the papers, my phone buzzed with an unknown number.
"Olivia? It's Sophia." Her voice was sugar-sweet. "Can we meet up?"
At the coffee shop, Sophia sat across from me looking pale but perfect, even wrapped in bandages.
She didn't waste time: "Blake's already hurt, plus he gave me a kidney. He's barely eating, which is messing with his recovery. I want to cook for him..."
"So?" I stirred my coffee, not bothering to look up.
"I heard he was obsessed with your chicken soup." She bit her lip. "Could you... show me how to make it?"
My hand froze. I remembered making that soup whenever Blake got sick.
Once I had a fever so bad I could barely stand, but still dragged my ass to make him soup. Ended up passing out face-first on the kitchen floor.
"He's so whipped for you, he'd drink motor oil if you handed it to him," I said flatly.
Sophia shook her head: "I want him to have his favorite."
She put her hands together like she was praying, eyes getting all puppy-dog. "Please? I know I was bitchy about the coat. Let it go just this once? Teach me?"
