I'd made up my mind to ignore him. After what happened last time, I was convinced Ethan had completely misread me—and the thought left me unsettled.
But then there was Ryan, awkwardly trying to show he cared. His clumsy concern tugged at something inside me.
Just as I was leaving the office, some inexplicable impulse made me stop at his desk. I muttered under my breath,
"Sorry about earlier."
My voice was barely above a whisper, and I refused to meet his eyes—but he heard me.
The second he realized it was an apology, his whole face lit up like I'd just handed him the moon.
And weirdly enough, seeing him so ridiculously happy lifted my own spirits, just a little.
Downstairs, Vanessa was idling at the curb in her Audi, window rolled down. She waved when she spotted me, but I barely managed a nod as I trudged over, my mood still frosty.
"Where are we going?" I asked flatly the second I slid into the passenger seat, like nothing could possibly interest me.
"You look like someone kicked your puppy. Relax, I'm fixing that!" Vanessa flashed me her usual carefree grin, completely unfazed by my deadpan expression.
Before I could even buckle my seatbelt properly, she hit the gas.
As we drove, she poked at the Ethan situation, just as confused as I was about why he'd vanished into thin air.
But I had no clue either. The whole thing made no sense.
Just hearing his name sent a sharp twist through my chest.
Vanessa caught the shift instantly, backtracking with a quick apology and a promise to drop it.
Twenty minutes later, we pulled up outside a nightclub.
Under normal circumstances? I'd have noped out immediately.
I was still married. Vanessa was divorced. Not the same.
Plus, the thought of Ethan finding out made me nervous—I usually avoided places like this entirely.
"Sophia, he's the one ghosting you. What's there to worry about?"
When I hesitated outside, Vanessa parked, hooked an arm around my waist, and practically shoved me through the door.
She'd clearly planned ahead. Unlike last time, the private room wasn't packed with guys.
Instead, a handful of women lounged around, drinks in hand, while one danced like nobody was watching.
Vanessa must've warned them about my mood, because the second I walked in, they offered sympathetic smiles and pushed a drink my way.
At first, the whole scene made me tense—even resistant.
Vanessa noticed and waved them off. They got the hint instantly, giving me space.
She guided me to a plush sofa and poured me my usual cocktail.
I was in such a foul mood that I knocked it back in one go.
Vanessa's eyebrows shot up. Grinning, she gave me an approving thumbs-up before reaching for the bottle again.
