I couldn't take it anymore. I snatched the glass of red wine off the table and threw it back like a shot.
"Damn, Sophia! Didn't know you could drink like a pro!" Vanessa cackled, already refilling my glass before I could even set it down.
But when I polished off the second one just as fast, her amusement turned to concern. "Whoa, slow down, girl! You're gonna be flat on your face before the fun even starts!"
"Wine's meant to be savored, not chugged!"
I barely heard her. The moment she poured the third, I tipped it straight down my throat.
Vanessa's jaw dropped—then she burst out laughing, shaking her head at my shameless guzzling.
"Okay, okay, at least eat something before you turn into a mess," she insisted, shoving a plate of snacks in front of me.
Three glasses deep, the room started tilting.
That's when the singer onstage blanked on the lyrics to some sappy love song. Without a second thought, I lurched to my feet, grabbed the mic, and belted it out like my life depended on it.
"Hell yeah!"
"That voice! Where've you been hiding that?"
"Ladies, put your hands together for Sophia!"
Vanessa whooped, clapping like a maniac. No surprise—she'd dragged me here to shake me out of my funk. She knew how wrecked I was over Ethan ghosting me.
But halfway through, the melody twisted into something mournful—or maybe my heart just couldn't fake it anymore. My voice broke, tears spilling hot down my cheeks.
"Gorgeous!" Vanessa hollered, like crying mid-performance was some kind of power move.
Her energy was contagious. I swiped at my face, sucked in a breath, and threw myself back into the song like I was exorcising demons.
By the last note, something in my chest had loosened. Maybe I'd just let my wild side out to play.
Or maybe, just maybe, part of me wanted to spite Ethan for leaving me like this.
"Vanessa! Get some guys in here!" I slumped against the couch, shouting over the music into her ear. "What kind of girls' night doesn't have eye candy?"
She shot me a wicked grin, exchanging a look with the others. "Oh, you want a show? Say less."
One quick call later, the door flew open—and in strolled a lineup of ridiculously good-looking men.
Charming? Check. Hot? Absolutely.
Did any of them make my pulse skip?
Not a damn one.
