The moment the man finished speaking, he gave a sharp wave, and the foreigners behind him instantly closed in around me, their faces twisted with malice.
"No—please! Help!"
My voice cracked with fear. Why had Ethan taken my money? Was this his way of setting me up to die?
A massive black man seized my wrist, his grip like a vise. Pain shot up my arm, and I cried out.
Just then, the simpleton who'd been cowering behind me seemed to snap out of his daze. His wide, frightened eyes darted between us before he suddenly stepped forward, fumbling in his pockets.
"You... want this?"
"Here—take it!"
His voice was slow, childlike, as he pulled out a wad of Thai baht.
The foreigners' anger evaporated the second they saw the cash. The black man immediately released me, his scowl turning into a greedy grin.
"Take it... all of it..."
The fool emptied his pockets, handing over everything—at least thirty or forty thousand baht.
The men snatched the money, their laughter rough and eager. "Drinks are on us tonight!" one crowed. "And some pretty girls to go with 'em!"
With a few crude jokes, they divided the cash and swaggered out of the room.
Only when the door clicked shut behind them did I finally exhale, my legs trembling. I rushed to lock the door, my fingers fumbling with the bolt.
Once it was secure, I leaned against the wall, gasping, waiting for my heartbeat to slow.
"Sister... you okay?"
I spun around—the fool was right behind me, his face creased with stupid, earnest concern.
"Turn around!" I snapped. "Don't look at me!"
Realizing I was still clutching the bedsheet around me, my face burned. He flinched at my tone, his expression crumbling like a scolded child, and immediately faced the wall.
I scrambled into my clothes, my hands shaking.
"Sister... you dressed yet?" he mumbled, still obediently staring at the wallpaper.
Once I was fully clothed, I marched up to him, arms crossed.
"What's your name? And why the hell are you in my room?"
"I... I'm Daniel," he stammered. "Everyone calls me Daniel..."
I almost laughed. Yeah, right. But the way he said it—so utterly serious, like a kid insisting on his imaginary friend's name—made me pause.
"How old are you?"
He held up his fingers, brow furrowed in concentration. "I'm four... no, wait—five?"
The confusion in his eyes was too genuine to fake. This guy wasn't acting.
"Alright, Daniel," I said, leaning in. "Listen carefully. I need you to tell me the truth. How did you get in here?"
His face scrunched up as he struggled to remember. "A man... no, a brother... said there was good food here. Promised me chocolate if I came..."
He tilted his head, lost in thought. "I ate a white candy... then... I fell asleep..."
As soon as the words left his mouth, he shrank back, like he expected me to slap him.
