Even with the most spirited horses, I'd never use tools that could hurt them.
But these people were planning to use them on a human being!
I frowned: "Seren! What do you think you're doing!"
"This is a legitimate business! You can't assault people! You're breaking the law!"
Seren stared at me like I'd said a joke.
She burst into laughter: "You're just some horse-mucking nobody, and you think you can lecture me?"
"Well let me tell you something—my word is law around here!"
"Break her in good! If anything happens, I'll take responsibility!"
I looked at the dozens of staff members surrounding me, all wearing sinister smiles:
"Everyone knows Seren is Xander's precious princess. How did she get the balls to challenge Seren?"
"Some horse-mucking nobody thinks she can run a facility this size? She'll have to rely on Xander anyway!"
"I'd play nice if I were you, before you get kicked out. Behave yourself and maybe we'll let you shovel manure!"
The group closed in on me with murderous intent.
I backed away, calculating my options.
Years of training horses had made me stronger and faster than them. In a straight fight, I might not lose.
But I didn't want Hudson to face difficulties because of me, or have a falling out with the Sullivan family that could affect the organization's events.
I wouldn't escalate unless I had no other choice.
As for the marriage arrangement, I'd explain everything to Hudson personally.
With that decision made, I dodged their attacks and ran toward the exit.
Just as I neared the gate, I heard hoofbeats behind me.
Even getting closer!
I glanced back to see one of my own horses bearing down on me.
The rider seemed intent on trampling me!
But horses are intelligent creatures, and no matter how the rider tried to control it, the horse refused to hurt me.
Frustrated, the rider raised his whip and lashed it directly at me!
Unable to dodge in time, I took the full force of the blow across my shoulder, the leather tearing through skin and flesh.
Searing pain shot through me as I crashed to the ground.
Only then did the rider dismount, walking over with a cold smile.
His voice was the same one I'd heard on the phone:
"You stole Seren's right to be my wife. This little punishment is getting off easy."
"If you keep being difficult and don't serve Seren properly, I won't be so merciful next time."
"Now crawl over here and get on your hands and knees. Give Seren three rides around the ring until she's satisfied!"
His words sent rage surging through my veins, fury exploding in my skull.
I clutched my shoulder and forced myself to stand, glaring at him coldly:
"Apologize to me! Or this won't end here!"
Xander just snorted, gesturing dismissively to the surrounding staff:
"Hold her down and put a bridle on her. Let Seren take her first ride!"
As the employees closed in again, Seren suddenly called them off.
She smiled sweetly at Xander: "Honey, I have a better idea."
"This horse-mucking bitch is too stubborn. What's the fun in tormenting her? I don't want to dirty myself."
"Looks like those animals are her real treasures, so why don't we..."
Panic shot through me as I screamed: "Don't you dare!"
She laughed, wrapping her arms around Xander and snuggling into his chest:
"Relax, I was in the Animal Protection Society back in college. I'd never do anything too harsh to your little ponies."
"I just noticed their shoes are getting old. Thought I'd help them get some new ones."
Soon the manager came over with a crew, but when I saw what he was carrying, my eyes went wide with horror!
Those weren't horseshoes—they were sharp, thin steel spikes!
If those were hammered into the horses' hooves, these competition horses would be ruined forever.
And given horses' physiology, once their legs were damaged, they rarely survived long!
