Lauren stayed with me that night.
Later, Ryan checked the footage, realized I'd told the truth, and sent someone over with a brand-new phone.
I didn't turn it down. He owed me that much.
But what pissed me off the most wasn't the phone—it was how quickly he trusted Jessica.
And how easily he turned on me.
We've been together for years. Married almost a year.
But he's never believed in me.
Turns out Jessica was so "traumatized," and so stressed about her singing career, that she checked herself into a hospital.
Her pitiful little act worked.
Ryan finally agreed to the divorce.
"Don't forget this, Melanie—once we're divorced, you're nothing to me."
He stood outside the county clerk's office in a suit, eyes boring into me.
I almost laughed. Bitterly.
Truth is, I've never been anything to you. Not really.
"You could still apologize, y'know. I'd give you a chance to explain."
He didn't realize that every word out of his mouth dripped with condescension.
Like I was just some pet—one that only existed to stay loyal, stay obedient, stay useful.
The second I got "difficult," he assumed I was broken.
I walked past him.
"You're a busy man, Mr. Caldwell. Let's not waste your precious time."
I walked out with the divorce papers in hand.
The road ahead wouldn't be easy.
But everything before this? Dead and buried.
Today—I start fresh.
I kept building my livestream business. Got better at it.
Started gaining traction.
Eventually, I opened my own studio. Hired real pros.
Then came the big one—an invite to the New Media Forum.
I showed up. Smiling. Polite. Shaking hands. Handing out cards.
All the things that used to scare me, I now did with ease—thanks to Lauren's coaching.
While I was chatting with an investment firm rep, Jessica walked in… arm in arm with Ryan.
I was mid-handshake when I saw them. My smile froze.
Jessica strutted right up, smacked the business card out of my hand—and crushed it under her heel.
Someone nearby, a little drunk, pointed me out.
"Hey, isn't that your wife, Ryan? Or... ex?"
Ryan glanced at me. Didn't say a word.
Jessica, on the other hand, was seething.
I smiled faintly.
"You're not wrong. But Mr. Caldwell and I are no longer connected. Let's not stir up gossip."
Ryan's eyes went dark.
I didn't care.
I had investors to charm, sponsors to pitch.
Later that evening, people gathered by the pool to watch fireworks.
Ryan stayed back. Waited ‘til I was alone—and grabbed me by the wrist.
"Are you serious, Ryan? What the hell is wrong with you?"
He smoothed down his designer shirt, gold-threaded and ridiculous.
Then looked me up and down.
"Without me—or the Caldwell name—you're just another woman begging for scraps in this room."
"You see those guys ogling you? Makes me sick."
"That fake smile of yours—do you think any of them respect you?"
"And you think your last name makes you respectable?" I snapped.
"Without Daddy's money, no one here would give a damn about you either."
He massaged his temple.
"We used to sleep in the same bed, Melanie. Do you have to talk to me like this?"
Before I could respond, Jessica came looking for him.
I had a two-minute keynote to deliver. No time for their bullshit.
But just as I started my speech, a couple burst onto the stage.
"Scammer! My wife got sick eating those organic cranberries you sell!"
"You'll do anything for money, you lying bitch!"
The man hurled a wine bottle straight at me.
Lauren threw herself forward and shoved me out of the way.
I stumbled backward in heels, crashing into someone's chest.
Steven—the event's co-founder—caught me.
"You okay?" he asked, helping me steady.
He turned to the couple. His voice like ice.
"You weren't even on the guest list. Assaulting a speaker? That's jail time."
The bottle hadn't hit me, but the wine splashed all over my face and chest.
I probably looked like a soaked clown.
Chaos broke out.
Ryan didn't move. Jessica clung to his arm as he stared down at me.
Steven gestured to the mic.
"Want to step down and deal with this, or…?"
I wiped my face with the back of my hand.
"No. I said two minutes. I'll finish what I came here to say."
